A sight that nobody ever thought they would see. The K4 rescues the West Highlander Steam Express at Oban on 5/9/10. Not a brilliant image but a record shot taken at 8.30 pm before the loco attaches to the rear of the train.

Think this was the year 61994 did most of the Fellsmans in one season. One of my favourite mainline steam pictures I've ever taken (above)

Is that the tour she ended up still working until around 2/3am when a 47 came to help out?

Yes, we didn't get back to Glasgow Queen Street till 0311 on the 6/10, some 8hrs 14 minutes late.

Indeed. My memory of that arrival is talking to the Scotrail station supervisor who had come down to open the station up for us. As the bleary eyed passengers filed past heading for their hotels a group gathered and gave a round of applause for the loco crew. His rather incredulous comment to me was something to the effect that they get moaned at for being eight minutes late and here we are being applauded when we are eight hours late!

I seem to recall passengers still being bleary eyed next morning when we left Glasgow as I doubt if anyone got more than 4 hours sleep after our Oban trip. For me the Oban trip is my best remembered moment of 61994.

I drove to Scotland so as to join the tour just for Oban. We struggled to get there with seven on that locals were saying was one too many. Even had to set back after Tyndrum Lower following a stall. Arrived ok at Oban at noon, left at 2.20 as planned but only made it as far as MP 69.25 where 45407 literally puffed to a halt without slipping.

The fiasco was Network Rail's inability to make a quick decsion about what to do. The fact it was a Sunday didn't help and the weight restrictions on the bridges on the line were a stumbling block with the K4 too heavy. Finally it was agreed that the K4 could come down from Crainlarich to top and tail the train. We left after the last service train. I left for the south from Crainlarich soon after 10 30 pm to leave the tour to continue back to Glasgow.

A memorable trip in many ways but the opportunity to snap a K4 at Oban was historic and will never be repeated. So truly a best remembered moment

20.10.12 Boulby branch, 11.4.07 toward Corriemuillie summit on the Kyle line, 21.8.12 each way on Frodsham viaduct, 8.8.12 Ais Gill and 18.1.15 Burrs on the ELR. Such a wonderful machine.

September 1989 rail tour the Worcestershire saucerer from Hooton to Worcester with a stop at Kidderminster for the svr. On the SVR we had a mostly teak set with 3422 resplendent in apple green livery and best of all I got a footplate ride running round at Kidderminster - a memorable moment for a 10 year old!

An early morning start that was well worth it, seen climbing past Oakworth mound on an early morning photocharter at the KWVR, the sun having jus climbed above the valley side. in 2014.

My memory is a bit more frivolous and light hearted...

My railway had signed up 61994 for a gala which was a big puller for us. Out went the press release, but with the unfortunate claim that our gala would be starring "The Great Marquee"!!!

Said slip led to most of the crews referring to this fine engine as "The Big Tent" for most of the duration of it's visit!

Of all the memories, it is this one that sticks in the mind the most :)

I think I've only had one encounter with 61994 which was when it visited the Bluebell in 1996 (I was about 5 I think)and remember seeing it from the carriage, in Platform 2 at Sheffield Park but not sure if it took our train or not.

When we coupled Sentinel 6515 (for a short time GWR No. 12) on to 61994. I call this photo 'Dignity and Impudence'. I will leave to others to decide as to which is which.

61994 is on the move today to her final resting place at John Cameron’s Balbuthie Farm.

Seen at the head of a train in Bo’ness station one last time last night; sadly not in steam!

I am glad she will be undercover, on display, and with an appropriate shed mate for her future.

It is still bringing a lump to my throat to realise that I'll never get to see the K4 in steam, in person, again after seeing it for just one glorious afternoon at the SVR many, many years ago.
