Very detinctive and unique this sound from the Deltic. At full power one can almost imagine that the engine will explode!

Alycidon seen at Scout Green just after nine this morning.

 

My video of the tour will be up tonight when I get back from Edinburgh

 

Feel sorry for the passengers seated in their air conditioned tubes with no open windows as they won't get to hear much of that glorious Deltic sound.

 

There's always the buffet car...

...but to the line-side observer, you can (briefly) gaze and listen in awe; and just for a brief moment, it's 1974 again

 

Could not make out which Steam Engine was behind the Deltic providing Shovage.

Quite, it's pleasing to see a number of heritage diesels now wearing conventionally historical liveries on the mainline again. Three this week alone with the Swanage 33 thunderbird, 9009 and D213 tomorrow. Add in LSLs 47s and there is plenty to stir the memories.

 

Pleasing to see a rake of matching liveried coaches as well.

 

That for me is what makes it - not some raggle-taggle assortment of stock in varying liveries in varying states of decrepitude along its length.

The first time I saw mainline steam it was Sir Nigel Gresley in Express Passenger Blue, with a complete rake of crimson and cream coaches behind and it looked magnificent. It set a standard that was rarely lived up to afterwards, sadly.
