Here's a photo showing the next section to receive the basic scenery. On the right is the slate quarry and on the left the second passenger station.
The two sidings on the right in the quarry lead to the short incline, which doesn't show up very well due to the viewpoint of the photo.
There's obviously still a lot to do, but at least it's now starting to look like a model railway.

Having put up a photo of the quarry section, it occurs to me that I've not put up the photo of the main section's basic scenery, so here it is.
What looks like a steep cutting or ravine at the top left is actually going to be a tunnel, but because Murphy's Law states that if a train is going to derail it will do so in the tunnel, so the tunnel has been built to have a removable top, but the top hasn't yet been made.
The station building & platform will be on the long straight nearest the edge of the baseboard, the three sidings on the right will be the loco yard, the siding on the left is for coaches etc.

My late father converted two Hornby 75ton breakdown cranes to actually lift on our now dismantled oo gauge layout. This video shows them at work.

Very impressive. My grandfather’s layout had one and I always lamented that it was more for show and imagining you were using it to rerail things rather than actually rerailing things.

    Nice layout btw.

I've been distracted by other things, but here's the latest photo of the the quarry.

I like the incline will it be working?

I did think about it, but no it'll just be a piece of static scenery.

An early Christmas prezzie came through the post today:

I had the noble intention of lettin someone wrap it up for me for Christmas, but I've already read it cover to cover...

It really is very very good, and makes the whole thing sound easy. Hopefully the idea is to make the whole business more reliable and quicker than before, as although I was reasonably satisfied with my first attempts at carriage building, they were still first attempts and they weren't perfect. Mr Jenkinson's methods are suitable up to 10mm scale, and the idea of a few of those most ornate carriages in larger scales just as models in their own right does sound rather appealing if I can master it.

The author seems to favour batch building half a dozen or so carriage sat once, so get your orders in now folks!:eek:

Are you familiar with the authors 00 model - The Little Long Drag? A massive recreation of the Settle & Carlisle with authentic train formations, it was hardly suprising that he was building coaches in batches , and indeed it became such a task he didnt complete it & went to O Guage instead

So can you include some LMS suburbans as used on the S&D Branch services?

That's going back some years - I remember reading some articles on that layout as far back as the 70s.

Sadly David Jenkinson is no longer with us - there is a Wiki entry covering his career and writing.

Sadly there seems to be little evidence of it online, I'm sure it'll be in a mag somewhere.

You don't need to build those! https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/shop/wagons-coaches/passenger-coaches/non-corridor-57ft-coaches.html

It depends what sort of coaches you are making, any pre grouping panelled coaches require a lot of time and self discipline to stay with it

His models of the Settle and Carlisle were so representative of the area that I recognised the full size from the model rather than the other way round.

Likewise! I had seen the Railway Modeller articles, and also one of the layouts at an exhibition, then a few years later visited the real thing and it was almost as good as the model...

Ah, I have the modern solution to the most time consuming part of panelled coaches:
Plastic sheet goes in one end, fiddly panelling comes out the other. :) I've built a few panelled carriages so far that have been reasonable, but hopefully the techniques in this book should make everything more reliable and quicker. I'm determined to master lining with a bowpen though, so far I've managed to get down to about 0.3-40.4mm after a lot of fettling with some cheap ones, which is probably ok for O gauge but really needs to be >0.2mm for OO.

I've had that in a couple of places, a rather weird sensation!
