My footage of her on the outward leg. Filmed at Whiteball, slogging up Rattery Bank at Tigley and crossing Forder Viaduct near Saltash. Enjoy.

The "LSL at fault" narrative is certainly the one being pedalled by @IamDaniel aka @thatcargeek over on Twitter at the moment. Unwise to jump to conclusions, correlation and causation not always linked.

Yes, interesting that the diesel left Taunton before the tour had even left Par, yet seemingly no one on the train was informed.

So if the train left Plymouth with no steam on the front where has Braunton gone - Laira maybe? I guess the 37 that came to the rescue was the one that was "making funny noises" earlier. Can't be that much wrong with it!

I was thinking of passing comment, but knowing what reaction might ensue, managed to refrain.

  11. I'm glad to have chosen the Black 5/EE Type 3 combination after all. Don't these people talk to each other?

That's a sad outcome to a trip that is usually seen as one of the highlights of the charter calendar.

To have insufficient coal is rather more unusual than running out of water as in the latter case you only need, for example, the injectors to be letting water by due to a problem for that to happen. Can't comment on the specific circumstances of this trip but I can say that in the case of Clan Line, my understanding is that at the planning stage it is the loco owners who make the decisions. How much coal is needed and where it will be replenished as well as exactly where water stops will be taken and how much water may be needed are all decided in advance. This information is then used to inform the outline times and stops that are put to the TOC and NR.

    Thanks

Has anyone thought that perhaps there was a problem in getting the coal to the locomotive, road vehicle broken down, illness, etc, etc.
Just to blame all and sundry without knowing the facts seems rather pointless, but why spoil a good story with the truth!

Post on WNXX forum suggests coal was ordered for St Blazey but didn't arrive.

I'm sure the facts of the matter will be of little importance to @IamDaniel in his haste to hold the "culprits" to account.

Reported on SWRG that ''34052 is in steam at Laira and that a lorry has arrived to replenish the tender with coal''.

I would imagine a move to the WSR would follow soon after. <BJ>

You had a diesel on the back that assisted on Saphos Trains if that's what you are referring to. LSL take the hire fee for providing their engines and it's only fair to expect them to deliver an engine that's fit to run the route they've taken on. That means coal and water provision en route as well as mechanically fit to run. Daniel made a statement of fact. Actually I brought it up with him as we talked on the train. At Plymouth the support crew wouldn't talk to us. No-one was being nasty toward them but rightly felt they deserved to know what had happened and an apology wouldn't have gone amiss for robbing the paying passengers of what are to my mind the highlights of the day, Hemerdon and Dainton Eastbound.

I was on the Scot last year when the same thing happened and then they refused to confirm what we could all see and knew. I'm not impresses with them at all. Still, they have another Duchy in a fortnight to redeem themselves but there was no need for them to be so guarded. Andy Taylor was mortified.

Axe to grind? Please. 'Facts is facts'.

Andy Taylor was driving and Pete Robert's normal firemen, John Shaw was on the shovel. John's not known for over firing and the Bullied's are his thing. We had steam all day with no excessive lifting of the safety valves.
