Just a couple of pictures showing some of the work that continues to be done on 5239. Riveting of the frames is complete and painting them has commenced. Elsewhere needlgunning of the boiler, drilling of the crown stays and machining of the axle boxes continues as well as the continual process of cleaning up and painting other individual components.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

A couple of pictures showing the state of play with 5239. As can be seen painting of the frames is progressing well. Copper welding in the firebox has been completed and the boiler is due to undergo NDT examination shortly. Elsewhere progress continues on the axleboxes and general cleaning, repainting and a start of refitting of components.[IMG][IMG]

5239's frames are due to be re-wheeled on Tuesday (11th Sept). The boiler NDT referred to in the previous post revealed no unknown problems.

Wrong thread I know, but is 4277 from PDSR also undergoing a contract overhaul somewhere else?

R Clips are a regular feature on Construction plant but are they seen as a correct feature of a Steam Loco?

I think its as much as anything a case of that's what it came with. They do however make changing blocks in service quicker and easier than having to go round closing up and knocking out split pins and then doing the reverse once the new blocks are fitted.

I guess it is for easy and quicker maintenance as pwsw says. The DSR is a heavily graded line so half of every journey made, in either direction, is downhill so presumably blocks do get their fair share of wear. ;)

On pins maybe but it looks odd on bolts that would not be undone regularly.

I wonder what the safety pros and cons are. Didn't we have rather a serious incident recently partially caused by an incorrectly fitted split pin? Absence of R clips is much more obviously visible, and they ought to be stronger than split pins, but on the other hand they're more easily removed. This *must* have been studied in industry.

It also occurs to me that it might be advantageous to use R clips on everything while you are still fettling and adjusting, just for convenience, and then go round and replace them all with split pins before service. Be interesting to hear from horse's mouth.

The new firehole plate was today being welded into position. The photo shows the root run in progress.

Nice to see the pics - not a loco I've come across before.
Got to say that the nameplate looks a little odd on the smokebox.

The naming has been found to be very welcome by the travelling public. A good many mention the names of locos they travelling behind when posting on social media sites. It seems to be of great interest to children - and after all it is them who often 'persuade' their charges to take a train ride. :) Many 'heritage' lines try to attract extra revenue by providing interesting events and features. This costs little and repays well.

It is interesting to get to see the parts that are usually hidden from view. No livery issues there. :D
