    6233 'DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND'

    ROLL OUT DAY

    at the West Shed
    Midland Railway-Butterley, Ripley, DE5 3QZ

    Sunday 9th September 2018
    (10am - 4pm)

Come and see 6233 'Duchess of Sutherland' in LMS Crimson Lake livery following completion of her recent major overhaul!

A photo of 6233 running with Saloon 45000 at the Midland Railway a few years ago. Please note that the Duchess will not be running on September 9th - it will be a static event.

    Outline for the day:

10am - 12pm: Photographic session: £10 entrance charge to the West Shed area, where the Duchess will be positioned static outside the Shed for uninterrupted photographs. No pre-booking needed - pay at the West Shed to gain admission. Commercial photography by prior arrangement only - please get in touch.

12pm: Official unveiling of the Duchess outside the West Shed.

12pm - 4pm: Free admission to the West Shed (donations welcome) - the Duchess will remain on static display outside the West Shed but it will be open to the general public, so no 'clear' posed photographs will be available.

Please note that the Duchess WILL NOT be running on this day - it is a static event.

Keep up to date with any changes to plans via our Facebook page:
    https://www.facebook.com/PRCLTWestShed/

    ACCESS & VISITING INFORMATION:
Access to the West Shed on the Midland Railway-Butterley's Swanwick site is via Butterley Station. The scheduled train departure times from Butterley Station on 9th September are currently: 11.00am, 12.20pm, 2.00pm & 3.20pm. To travel by train a separate train fare applies, payable to the Midland Railway-Butterley. Please see the MR-B website for train running times and fares:
    http://www.midlandrailway-butterley.co.uk/

Alternatively, there is a public footpath from Butterley Station to the Swanwick Junction site of approx. 1/2 mile distance (please note that this is over uneven ground and is not suitable for people with limited mobility, wheelchairs or pushchairs).

    The Last Stages...
As we want the unveiling of the 'Duchess' to be a special occasion, we don't want anybody to see the finished look before our official 'roll out day' on 9th September. Therefore, the workshop viewing gallery is currently closed to visitors and it is not possible to see 'Duchess of Sutherland'. This is so that the final stages of painting and putting the various parts back on the 'Duchess' can take place away from public view with the finished look being revealed to everyone at the same time on Sunday 9th September. We hope you will understand our reasons for doing this - we simply want to make the Duchess' comeback into LMS Crimson Lake livery a special occasion!

Please note: our library/ activity room will still be open for children's craft activities and refreshments every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and most weekends to September 2nd, but there will be no access onto the workshop viewing gallery and it will also be screened off from view. This is our last week of summer holiday activities.

Subject to the completion of successful test runs, 'Duchess of Sutherland' is scheduled to appear at the following heritage railway galas:

    20/09/2018 - 23/09/2018 : Severn Valley Railway Gala

    12/10/2018 - 14/10/2018 : Swanage Railway Gala

    19/10/2018 - 21/10/2018 : East Lancashire Railway Gala

Main line operations will follow as below, with more trips likely to be added. This is the current programme, but please remember that things can and do change, sometimes at short notice!

17/11/2018 : London – York (Railway Touring Company)

06/12/2018 : York – Peterborough (Railway Touring Company)

08/12/2018 : Kings Cross – Lincoln – Kings Cross (Railway Touring Company)

15/12/2018 : London – York (Railway Touring Company)

20/12/2018 : York – Peterborough (Railway Touring Company)

Be nice to see her operate the 1st WCME of 2019 ! That would be a proper curtain raiser for the new year and possibly a full train !

Why? I always wanted to see a green Big Lizzie and when I was lucky enough to have 6233 and 46100 at the Mid Norfolk I was rather underwhelmed by it, (never thought I'd say this btw) in Red though...

Personally speaking I think there are enough green liveried locomotives (of whatever shade of green) already preserved or being restored. It makes a welcome change to see such a fine loco in a red livery (except Hogwarts ) and whilst black may be favoured by LMS afficionados I find black quite dismal - too reminiscent of dirty LMS stock of the past.

There you go... to be fair, we had her in green far longer than was originally planned and I'm looking forward to seeing her out and about in LMS livery :)

For the purists 6233 was the only Duchess to survive the war in red and have the deflectors fitted so historically correct in this livery although I don't think it would have been in anywhere near such pristine condituion

46245 looked great in maroon around 1959 . I dunno if it had a special paint job . she was frequently used on the Caley .most of the others were maroon , but the green ones were especially welcome as they tended to sport a 66A shedplate .
4 1909af7b455bf954d6b828e6468c9de6.jpg 6255 looked very smart in green ,although she was not often seen daan sarf……………. withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmore

After transfer from Camden in 1963 46245 along with 46240 were sort of 'pet engines' at Willesden and kept in immaculate condition but sadly spending a lot of time in the roundhouse with very little work to do.

She does look good in red, now, with 6233 back after its ten year which toc is likily to operate it, plus would 6201 be back in traffic by next year, ? after the last few years of not much verity on the mainline, perhaps 2019 might be the year, that changes,

You won't get any information out of Carnforth but I think there is a good chance that Lizzie will be back next year

I believe some trips recently announced for November might feature 6201.
