Likewise, can't wait for it, the SVR gala should be a fitting debut with its superb LMS rake. Looking forward to some rides and some nice snaps too. Is that whistle normal though? Sounds a bit like a strangled cat at the moment until she clears her throat.

Any idea why BR allocated them to Willesden, which indeed had very little work for such locos?

The LMS numbering system only went up to 7, when BR took the system they updated it increasing it to 8 (and later 9 for the 9fs) and so they were only 8Ps under BR, even though nothing had changed. The LMS only going up to 7 led to the rather anomolous designation of the jubilee as "5xp" of "5 and a half" until it was put up to 6 under BR's new system. I'm sure someone like @LMS2968 can tell us all a lot more/correct me if I've gone wrong anywhere! :)

From around 1:10 there's a furious rhythmic banging noise, which I've often heard steam locos make - what is it?

On September 15 1964 I watched 6233 being dragged by a grimy 'Black 5' northwards near Hest Bank to what everyone thought would be her final resting place where I photographed her 4 years later in September 1968. Looking forward to seeing her back at work and well done to everyone involved in her restoration. 50 years ago I wouldn't have believed it!

The air brake system is the source of several noises that you don't get on non-air braked locomotives. When first started up the air pump will operate furiously making what is usually referred to as a panting sound until working pressure is reached, after which it will slow down and almost stop, only operating slowly to make up for any loss of air. An irregular clicking noise that is also noticeable is caused by the automatic water traps that let out any water that condenses in the system. There are usually several of these on the loco.

They went to Willesden after Camden closed and mainly found occasional use on on substituting for failed diesels and freight and parcels work. Most of the times I went there they were in the roundhouse

The Caladonian hooter on Stanier Locomotives can sound a bit watery. I think it was because it was mounted horizontally so the condensate was difficult to clear. The little Ivatts with a vertically mounted hooter always seem to have a clearer 'voice'.

Many tanks for your information Steve! :)Very appreciated!
I have always wondered about this clicking noise from some locomotives. I love the sound of the air pump !

As @60017 said yesterday the engine was in BR green far longer than originally intended ( sensibly so I think ). If there were to be another livery applied in the future I would personally love to see BR Blue which was one of the four 'authentic' options proposed when the ballot was held and the only one of those options the engine hasn't yet carried. BUT as ever it's up to those who own and maintain the engine to decide, so can we avoid drowning in paint froth :Arghh: and just enjoy the sight and sound for another few years !

Thank you for that :) - I noticed UoSA making similar noises at Chester on Saturday.

Looking forward to the run on the 6th December, where (hopefully) I get to ride behind this and UoSA :D

I agree that if it has to have another livery in future, it should be BR blue. Enjoyed it whilst green, not fussed on LMS maroon as it looks too similar to WCRC's carriages, but had my fun. Good to ring the changes.

Well, here we are, the Crimson Lake is barely dry and the livery debate about a future repaint is getting into full swing. :Caffeinefix:
I guess there will be a few more pages yet. :D
