Not dropping any hints whatsoever. It was simply a like minded friend discussing the potential of the V4 to be something special. Nothing more, nothing less. No hints, no special knowledge and certainly nothing of any note to report.

I don't do that sort of thing. I prefer to be up front. If there's anything I know that I can't say, I don't say it!

If you wish to infer, that's on you. I was simply enjoying talking about an LNER design. :)

A fair point James - my only rebuttal would have been that the 2-6-2 continued unaltered, but then Mr Thompson went and spoiled it all for that argument by producing the "orphans of the storm"...!

It is still in fairness the most successful 2-6-2 tender engine design produced in the British Isles for use at home. I don't know enough about our exports but I suspect we must have produced a fair few prairies for overseas?

1st in the class wasnt necessarily the main reason for selecting the preserved collection. Black 5 No.5000 was the lowest numbered, but the 26th member. Schools Cheltenham was selected for its name.

There were several Black 5s numbered below 5000. The preserved 44767 and 44871 being but two examples.

Nah...they can start on the designs that were never built (for whatever reason), but that'll be long after I've gone up the crem chimney

Since they seem primarily interested in Gresley - what was the most obscure Gresley design, to be done when absolutely everything else has been built? Maybe we can ultimately look forward to the solitary Q3 rebuild of an Ivatt "Long Tom" 0-8-0? :)

As well as the wheels themselves being lighter i suspect that the coupled wheelbase is also shorter, and the boiler it supports is slightly smaller both in diameter and tube plate depth. A V4 boiler is looking like something that will respond and steam freely when worked but will drop off just as quickly when not. A good strong blower might be handy...

If you read the latest book by Keith Langston (pub Pen & Sword) you will learn that the Black 5 numbering started at 5000 BUT the Armstrong Whitworth order starting at 5025 was the first to be delivered hence 5025 being preserved privately. It was only once the number series reached 5499 that further deliveries worked backwards (n batches) from 4999 and IIRC the final duo were 44686/87 in 1951

Embarrassingly for the L.M.S. it was the Vulcan Foundry batch [I believe they delivered twenty, as the first forty were divided between Crewe and Vulcan twenty each] that turned up first starting with 5020. Before the official first locomotive 5000 was out-shopped, with the Strathspey's 5025 being marginally older than the aforementioned 5000.
