I seem to recall that there was a problem, but it was bigged up. There was also mention of a pipe that needed fixing at Grantham I think, but that wasn't bigged up, only one incident allowed obviously, and it had to be near catastrophe!

Where the car and bike took one to Edinburgh respectively, Tornado managed to take 400ish, in total comfort.

    Only one winner for me....

So that’s the winner that came second! Only joking. Many years ago a mate of mine owned an XK150 SE dhc it was an awesome machine and looks to die for. Built in the 1950s I can personally vouch for it being able to comfortably exceed Mallard’s record.

The trouble with that race against the car was that "Tornado" was an excursion. Due to the delay en route, it then lost it's path and a slow stopping sefvice was allowed to run in front of it which greatly contributed to the late arrival at Waverley. Trouble is that many of the viewers are now convinced cars are better than trains.

Some time later on that series about Eddie Stobart's one of their lorries was to race against a train hauled by a 66. At one stage the train was sixty miles ahead and the lorry was limited to 55mph. It still won though as the train had to stop twice for a crew change and each one took an hour! Viewers now have proof that lorries are better than trains for moving freight.

Produce the cameras & reporters and the rail industry shoots itself in the foot.

Just to correct a detail. It didn't lose any path. Tornado arrived at Grantham six early, York five late, Tyne Yard five early, Berwick two late and Edinburgh right time.

As I said, it was never a race and I'm convinced some of the filming on the road was done on a different day. How is it that Hammond rode the bike through a rainstorm when the day of the race was dry all day? As someone said it's done for entertainment

    Are you being serious John?

The weather is not the same across the whole of Great Britain the whole time.

There's conspiracy theories and there are conspiracy theories, but that is an absolute nonsense.

It was widely discussed after the run that filming of the road sections took place over at least two days.

It would hardly be a surprise: probably more surprising if all the road scenes had been filmed in one day (the logistics of that would be pretty tricky without a large number of crews: Top Gear had high production values, but not unlimited resources).

You can be pretty certain that Tornado ran that day to the timings recorded - I’d be far less certain about the car and the motorbike. Provided you just assume it was entertainment, not sport, it hardly matters: the only criterion of success is whether the end result was an enjoyable watch.

There’s absolutely no doubt that some sections with the car and bike were likely re shot for purposes of the film.

However the weather in question did genuinely happen on the day. That’s the bit I’m querying.

It's not a serious programme and who really cares if it wasn't a real race. You don't think all the stunt driving you used to see at Dunsfold was done by Clarkson do you? I Would think both the car and the bike spent most of the journey to Edinburgh on a trailer

Your right, it was a great piece, that did Railway Preservation, and everybody associated with it, a big favour.

I bet ridership levels the week after were higher at any preserved railway, on the back of it.
