Outbound was 47760 & 47580 both on the front (rather than T&T) and they seemed to run OK to Hellifield where 8F took over.
Return from Hellifield and third loco was added (dead?) on inside of the two 47s so formation was 47580, 47760 and 33207 all on the front
South of Chesterfield a strong smell of burning from front coach and train stopped quite abruptly. After a fashion the train took to a siding(?) to allow southbound trains now backed up, to pass. I overheard that problems had been found with brakes on 47580 as far north as Skipton?
47580 was left and the remaining train 47760 + 33207 reversed back north crossing the mainlines before continuing south as far as Leicester.
Past midnight, trains south of Leicester were stopped due to EWks so 47760 eventually went around the train and headed back north via Melton Mowbray, Oakham and Corby to drop remaining passengers from Kettering and stations south to Radlett. Some very tired passengers of SD.

Think the 33 might have been added as a means of sending it south for other duties.
Wasn't 47580 the one left at Weymouth on the DCE a couple of weeks back?

So I believe. It will be interesting to learn whether adding third loco for movement from Carnforth added to the brakes problem seen with 47580 that had seemed to run fine in tandem with 47760 alone.
The holding line/loop used whilst a plan was hatched was at Morton, just south of Clay Cross Jcn. The train minus 47580 then reversed wrong-line & back across to the down ML whilst a FL class 66 was held, then moved forwards again to rejoin the Up Main south to Alfreton.

Is 47580 the blue one with the Union Jacks owned by the Stratford Group?

Crikey indeed. That must be some sort of record. What a very long day for the passengers, stewards and WCRC. It started at just after 6.00am and returned at 03.30 the next day.

The latest we ever got back from a SD tour was 2.30 in the morning and we only went to Exeter and Bristol with 850 in July 2007.
850 failed at Westbury. We were transferred to a HST which was then stopped by cows on the line along the B&H IIRC. Never forgot that trip as we ended up in the taxi ride from hell. SD hired cabs to get passengers home from stations. The cabbie we had didn't speak much English and he got completely lost in the pitch black narrow country lanes which he travelled along at a set speed of 60mph, even over humped back bridges! When we eventually got home our finger nails were left embedded in the seats!

And stock back at Southall at 0430 so I guess the WCRC guys got to their hotel about 0515. Hardly worth bothering.
I wonder how you get home from Radlett at 0330?
Looks like those who were Chesterfield passengers were VERY lucky!

I think the record for a delay still sits with the West Highlander of 2010, where if I remember correctly, K4 No. 61994 arrived in Glasgow Queen Street at around the 8 hours late mark....

The double whammy was for those needing to drop at stations south of Leicester as by the time the train arrived diversions were already in place running via Corby and with speed restrictions from Corby to Kettering and at least Bedford. It seemed to take an age to get the 47 to run around at Leicester and head back north again!
I felt most sorry for those that needed to get from Radlett to destinations to the south and/or west of London!

Thanks Henry, that's what tempted me to go for it - I have opted out a few times recently.
