    35018 failed a FTR before the third last Scarborough Spa and was helped home by 45690 a week or so gone . You never know though.

    Well it had been busy on a not particularly arduous but definitely intensive steam programme that always brings with it risks. Hopefully it was a minor problem but when at York I've no idea how much real shed time is available for the West Coast fleet. Parking a loco up till the next time is not actually a clever thing to do even though it may be necessary.

    Sorry but it's become a hobby horse of mine that a few are taking as a criticism of individuals. We expect quite a lot of our main line steam fleet and in some cases that involves too much away from base. For example, Carnforth has got it right. Their locos go out for the day and then go home at night - York excepted.

    Anyway hopefully BIL has been sorted out.

    Agree with most of that but wouldn't say MN18 has been overly taxed by once a week 80 mile round trip on a mainly billiard table flat route. That was a sensible running in plan though and shakedown ongoing. It is in better shape than when it took last year's LRT I daresay.

    Agree completely with that but my main point was the extent of real access to the loco (beside, underneath, within) during layover periods at York. That is why to be home based between trips offers so much more opportunity for maintenance. But we digress.

    The SSE is potentially a really useful job for an ex works loco, wouldn't be surprised to see 46115 deployed likewise next year.

    Possibly so, although offset with being 3ish hours further away if anything needed from base? I assume they have access to the workshop at NRM in York, what is there at FW?

    The more relevant fact is that the Jacobite locos are hired in and maintenance is the responsibility of the owners. Manifestly this provides for adequate remote support and it is perhaps one reason why WC has rarely deployed its own locos up there because of the additional resources needed.
