If people would like a bit more time with no. 9 it's just been announced she's back at the NVR next Sunday

60009 Returns to NVR Sunday 9th September

We are pleased to announce that A4 No 60009, will run once again this Sunday (9th) between Wansford at Peterborough, No 9 will be at Wansford due to a stay over between main line services, and with thanks to John Cameron, we are able to run this iconic locomotive once again. Services start at 10:00 from Wansford on our Green timetable. Please note there will be no service to Yarwell on Sunday

I understand that 45 041 is to be hauling the shuttles to/from Wansford for the FS service.

Here's a thought; if a crew could be found, how about Tornado hauling them instead? Gets her miles up and you get both patients of the Peterborough Pacific Hospital in service. Win-win in my books. Hey, you could even have a double-header for all the volunteers!

    What a nice idea!

Last time I was at the NVR I was able to get up on 92 Squadron, a fine locomotive. This time around, we have three of Britain's finest Pacifics all on railway. Three variations on a theme and all equally wonderful in their own right.

Wake up at the back. :)
34081 is on the NYMR for the gala so only two Pacifics on the NVR at present.

Both of which don't live there (unless they break in the vicinity ;)).

Wonder what, if any, additional steam there'll be over the winter at the NVR or will it be 34081 all the way? Maybe 45 041 will get some usage instead?

Of course the most impressive pacific in the vicinity is the Danish E class mothballed down at Railworld...

Now that really would be a beast were she operational again... 4 cylinder compound, and apparently in a very good condition despite appearances.

We have however deviated wildly from Tornado...

Well at least it is a Pacific so it is not much of a deviation. A fabulous machine!

Sad thing is, without MONEY we can't take advantage of the NVR being adapted to Berne Gauge so that we can all enjoy seeing stuff from abroad running without having to travel there; heritage lines full of British locomotives are two a penny but the NVR has so much potential - if only it could be exploited...!

Plenty of continental locos have run on the NVR without hindrance. All the platforms were constructed/modified and a bridge demolished to accommodate them.

To me that was the main attraction of the NVR that it used to run continental stock .
which was an interesting change from everywhere else .

You've missed my point and perhaps I didn't word it more clearly - I know full well that the NVR was modified to take advantage of foreign rolling stock, but where's the money to restore those foreign locomotives to steam/run?

Many of the Continental locomotives were privately owned by individuals. Sadly said individuals soon learnt the full cost of locomotive ownership and as a result most never received an overhaul at the end of the ticket. A fair number returned to the continent and the few that remain are in the overhaul queue. The Danish F class is currently under overhaul and it is hoped that a return to traffic should be possible by 2020. The Swedish B class was bequeathed to the railway when its former owner passed away but I have no knowledge as to subsequent arrangements for a return to steam. The German class 64 would appear to be a basketcase and I don’t think return to steam will happen Unless a new owner with deep pockets is found. That leaves the Swedish 2-6-2T, a very long-term project so I believe.
Edit - The Polish tank loco is due to return at some stage so I believe

Agreed, you can make a small fortune from operating steam locomotives - provided that you start with a very much bigger one.

From what I understood when I had a tour of the shed at the beginning of the year the Class 64 is indeed a basket case - and full of the 'A' - word too. So it sits occupying useful space in the shed and little can be done with it.

At least something is being done with some of the locomotives, which is a comfort

I am happy to say that it is a swedish design.Made around WW1 for Stockholm Gothenburg and superfluous mid- thirties due to electrification.
Bougth for scrapvalue price by the danes and liked so much that we built 25 more mid WW2 until 1950.
It is a totally mad fourcylinder compound concept that guarantees max power below 1000hp.
The offending conrod is very short and will never transmit more than say 150 hp.
The small inside highpressure cylinder gets steam from the same valve as the low pressure cylinder on same outside of locomotive

It is OK to be not very smart and swedish in 1914 but being danish and building such lame ducks post Chapelon 1929 was pure waste.
But the E class sure look, smell and sound lovely.
This utterly wrong compound scheme was first tried in Scandinavia on the danish Litra P atlantic from 1907.

And there was I under the impression that Italian locomotive design was done to very obsolete thinking...........

To be fair the Swedes could be just as bad... B class 101A at Wansford was built in 1944 to a 1909 design.

My memory is a little fuzzy and I'm on a train at the moment so don't have any references to hand. However I believe the issue in Denmark at the time that they were only allowed to buy locosnew if they were Danish and the the timescales and quality of homegrown new stock was pretty poor (sound familiar?). This was got around by the importation of these Swedish giants.
