I wonder if it's a hangover when steam was regularly being substituted with diesel a couple of years ago?

This has been done before, quickening up journey times, and the upshot was to double track a section towards the summit after Goathland, to prevent waiting times in Goathland station.

I am sure steve or @Bean-counter would elaborate, but this was discussed quite a while ago.

This is just a pipe dream, discussed from time to time among-st people who have no say in the matter. In pre preservation days theline speed was only 35 mph, (and 30 to Whitby, even now) so thee wouldn't be a huge reduction in time. A good many years ago, double track to summit or elsewhere would have been relatively easy but track re-alignment and bridge renewals mean that such a thing would be hugely expensive. And passing loops add to journey time.

Not forgetting the amount of track that would need to have check rail reinstated.
We have been fighting for years to get the curves above check limits.

The NYMR today received its renewed safety certificate, allowing it to operate over the Esk Valley line between Whitby and Battersby and between Sheringham and Cromer. Valid until 30th August 2023. A condition limits the railway to 200 million passenger journeys/year.:)

Doesn't that equate to half a million seven coach trains a year. I can't see services on those two routes becoming that intense!

Nice to see the Goathland webcam back in operation, in a great location and nice and steady.

On a preserved railway, primarily for tourists, I don't anyone gives a rat's posteria if the trains are up to 30 minutes late, if you are playing swap the traction as a punter, everything still matches up on a single line, all you really want is steam when they say it's on.

Just back from a week in Whitby, and had a fab day on this challenging and picturesque route

Yes but that only works for the like of us, who plays swap the traction apart from a true enthusiast. The vast percentage of the NYMR daily passengers are not pure enthusiasts, most are there have a journey through nice scenery and places they have seen on the T.V. If you had a connection to make to a Northern service at Grosmont, or want to be back for dinner at Whitby or Pickering it may be very important.
I have noticed, coincidentally I am sure, that recently the ticker tape now does state the operational position, even down to the level on Thursday of saying the 1600 from Pickering was now 1700 due to an issue with the loco.

Considering I am here waiting for the 1538 to Whitby to pass by an hour later...

Would not want to be someone parked in Pickering about now who's wondering where their timetabled train is.

Edit: Just passed Ruswarp at 1640 with only 76079 hauling.Suggesting 926 has failed.

No failure, 926 & 76079 have swapped diagrams today, unsure on the reason. The last whitby run is only booked as one loco between Grosmont and whitby and return.

Any idea if the visiting engine week will be happening next year? Just wondering when it will be, and which engine could be the attraction as I am planning works annual leave and when to take it.

So does the NYMR lazy eye symbol have a nickname? How did that symbol come about?

A bit late in the day answering this but the reason, at least in part, was to get a 926 + 34081 double header for the final train to Pickering.

    Hi All
Thought I would give a heads up on our group meeting list of talks.

December meeting of the NYMR York Area Group. The December meeting will take place on Monday 17th December at 7.30 pm when Dave Birtle will give one of his excellent digital presentations to the group.
I have been told that it will feature images cross a range of transport subjects, all of which have been taken in the last couple of years since Dave gave his last talk to the group. I am sure it will be a very entertaining and humorous evening, with some fine images on view.

YAG meetings usually commence at 7.30 pm (the venue will be open from 7pm) with the exception of the AGM. Meetings are held in New Earswick Sports & Social Club, White Rose Avenue, New Earswick, York, YO32 4AG. There is a large car park near the venue and bar facilities are available inside the building (both hot and cold drinks are available).
For those of you wishing to come via public transport the nearest bus stop is just outside New Earswick Folk Hall. The venue is about 5 or 10 minute’s brisk walk from there.
Entrance to the meetings is at a very reasonable charge of £2 for all attendees.
The YAG will have their sales stand at the meetings for you to purchase second hand books, DVDs and VHS videos. An excellent chance for you to purchase last minute Christmas presents for your friends. There is usually a raffle held during the evening to help raise funds for YAG projects on the NYMR.

All meetings 19.00 doors open for 19.30 start except April when the group AGM is from 19.00

    17th December.
    The year that never stopped.
    Dave Birtle.

    Hi all,

I'm in the middle of writing a feature for an upcoming issue of RAIL and I'm looking for images to go with it. I don't suppose anyone has any shots of NYMR services leaving Whitby with the harbour to the right of the shot, please? Something along the lines of this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/47488865@N02/29745185087/

If an image is used (I have contacted a couple of people on Flickr, but I thought I'd hedge my bets in case they don't respond to me/say no by posting on here too), RAIL will be able to pay you through the normal channels on publication and you will obviously be credited.

Ideally I'm looking for something that was taken in the last year or two, please.

If you have a suitable shot, please PM me.

    Cheers,

    Daniel.

You may not but the couple the other week, whose train from Pickering was delayed, missed the last train to Whitby and they most certainly did give a rat's posterior. They were not impressed but AFAIK the NYMR arranged road transport to get them home.
