    I think (and better minds than mine in NELPG will correct me I'm sure) that it's a reference to the last steam hauled coal train out of Silksworth colliery which carried a blue star sign because it's something to do with a refreshing and nutritious local hop-based beverage!

    You are correct on all counts according to a NELPG who explained it to me. According to him, NELPG members drank vast quantities of said brown ale and thus the blue star was indeed carried on the final steam working to Silksworth in honour of this. IIRC their J27 did the honours that day but I may have misremembered that bit.
