Presumably that doesn't include pre-booked tickets?

Something like the Taunton link cannot be down to individual opinion, unless an individual is willing to pay for it. You do need evidence good enough to convince the board, and many other stakeholders, that the idea is worth the investment of loads of time and money. Evidence ‘good enough’ does not have to be ‘proof’ which, as we all know, lies only in the pudding. But a properly researched and costed business plan is rather more than just speculation.

Trevithick had the evidence of his engineering knowledge, as well as his logical mind. After he built his locos he had proof they could outperform a horse and might be worthy of investment. But he probably wasn’t very good at business planning since he died penniless.

I agree sometimes, when the evidence is far from conclusive either way, a leap of faith may seem like an attractive option. Like Brexit.

The Penydarren loco was built to settle a bet between two wealthy industrialists, as to whether the tramroad could ever carry a load as large as and as quickly as the competing canal, in a single train. It was far from certain; many eminent engineers thought the idea was impractical or (in Watt's case) highly dangerous. I don't think the bet was ever paid out either: the canal-backer claimed the journey had not been made as per the bet, due to the amount of breakdowns and track damage.

Like Brexit, information is lacking, outcomes uncertain, the process time-consuming and very, very expensive. Like Brexit, it may be going ahead anyway....

The bet is interesting but of no historical significance except for the opportunity to test Trevithick’s evidence. The Pen-Y-Darren locomotive was not successful as a practical machine - it was soon dismantled. It’s significance was as ‘proof of concept’ of the railway steam locomotive. Other engineers and railway owners got to hear about Trevithick’s experiments and were inspired to build better ones on the basis of his evidence.

If you're referring to the Taunton shuttle, it was not possible to buy these in advance.

If you really want the mods to react you need to report the posts you object to - some of them may have better things to do on a Friday night. As for me I enjoy a bit of thread drift sometimes but I’m happy to stop now, for a while.

Your other options are move on and read something else; or write something more interesting. Best wishes :)

That's strange. I had a valid ticket for the shuttle obtained from Penarth ticket office which was accepted without further payment as detailed in FGW's publicity.

Ah I see! The years I was referring to were before the FGW through ticket promotion.

I do wish people here would be more precise and careful in what they say. Falsehoods have been used here in the past to attack me.

If you wish people to be more precise in what they say, it would have helped to state at least the year when you obtained your ticket as I genuinely thought you were referring to an earlier occasion. Also, I am not pleased that you decided to reduce my name to just my surname when you quoted my posts. That, to me, is very rude.

Tbe answer is for people to stop posting on it but that's not the West Somerset way. The operations thread and the Taunton thread are surely enough for any railway but it seems not.

As for the Mods and speaking personally, there is another life out there.

This thread is now closed. It has run its course and whilst there is doubtless more that could be said, it's not going to happen on here.
