    Didn't the Claughtons also have a problem with insufficient gap between the ashpan and grate so a build up of ash would affect the steaming as well as in some cases loss of smokebox vacuum due to poorly fitting doors.

    It does seem that if the problems had been sorted the original boilers, even though smaller than Bowen-Cooke wanted, would have been adequate for Class 5X performance.
