Funny how whatever the starting point, all LMS threads converge on the 2P ...

That one was at Watford and was frequently station pilot at Euston IIRC.

40672 Engineer Watford has been mentioned a number of times in magazines, it was kept all bulled up in case the engineer need a quick visit to somewhere .Something similar was done in most areas on BR (M)Loco men quite enjoined this turn ,mainly because there was half a crown tip ,or was it five bob, if they didn't make any smoke.

I think they used to go for a ride to get the mileage up to avoid questions from above

the excursion I referred to earlier when we had a 4F , was a big disappointment as I had really hoped to get 40672

I must be a bit of a saddo really - still remembered the number of the bluddy thing nearly 60 years on

My recollection, possibly faulty, is of it pottering about over on the parcels side. What did dispose of heavy trains at Euston? Stanier tanks I suppose.

I don't think it's sad to remember things like that --- for London spotters that was a pretty unusual loco type. In fact I got out my book, I saw just 6 out of 148 2Ps still going in 1960 compared with every Royal Scot except 4. So 40672 is a bit of a stand out number, a bit like say 61572.

Camden Jinties plus Willesden 8Fs on the heavy overnight sleepers were the regulars at Euston. I had all the LMS namers from 45500 to 46257 (also the 4 65B St Rollox named 5s )apart from 45580 Burma ,that led me a right song and dance to try and get that , a 24E Blackpool engine for a number of years., never did see it.

I think Jinties dealt with a lot of the empty stock workings in and out of Euston.

Edit: Peckett got there just ahead of me.

the Fowler tanks were used more than the Staniers I think . it's a long time ago - and Jinties . and allegedly Super D s.
49413 was tucked round the back of Willesden for ages .I cabbed it every weekend - just because I could. 46256 had a lengthy stay as well and I did the same with him .
    I needed 4 Scots also -3/4/5/7 . I won't get them now !
61572 was a lucky cop . I saw it at Top Shed when it was booked for a railtour . Peter Townend apparently got a rollicking for overcleaning it.
most memorable probably was 4073 . it had come up from Swindon overnight prior to going to the Science museum . I chanced on it in the Pullman shed. she looked absolutely stunning

Thinking about it though, while there was an issue with the GWR Moguls at speed, the 4MT 2-6-4T's & the 9F's had leading trucks and reputations for being very fast indeed

The 2-6-4 and 2-10-0 had longer wheelbase than 2-6-0s

Wear on the leading coupled wheels of the moguls was also an issue (and to some extent on the small prairies).

Which suggests that the guidance from the leading truck was inadequate and the control springs should have been of a higher rating.

The side control was by Cartazzi slides, so centring was proportional to the weight on the pony truck, (replacing the swing link arrangement of the earlier prairies) which was why some of the moguls had weights added forward to increase the side control but at the expense of route availability.
