Join me on the 'Pilgrim Father' on 22nd November 2003 (in the days when stewards didn't stop you from putting your head out of the window) as No. 9 tackles Dainton on a damp day...… Not in HD I'm afraid.....

I’ve had some good runs behind UoSA but my abiding memory is a CME in July 2014. We had builders in for several months so travelling wasn’t an option but I managed to slip away to watch her come up Wilpshire bank.

My favoured spot is the overbridge on the Blackburn side of the summit but on this occasion I decided to stand on the Blackburn bound platform of Ramsgreave and Wilpshire station. No 9 could be heard some time before she rounded the curve, chime whistle blowing for the foot crossing. In very little time she thundered through the station only 3 ft from my left shoulder, the gentle, precise exhaust, chime whistle sounding for the length of the platform and beyond and giving it plenty. It was awesome, almost frightening, raw power. All too soon she was gone and soon she will be gone from the mainline forever. Thanks for the memory.

    When is No.9's ticket up?

With Ferryhill's imminent turntable completion, what are the odds of getting an east coast farewell for her in Aberdeen with some stable mates...

I was thinking Blue Peter, Tornado and maybe FS?
Will the completion of BP be that soon?
    Is this a crackers idea?

A1, A2, A3 and A4 back on shed at the very end of the east coast run?

Seems like a fitting send off to me?

Crikey, even I'd get off my backside to travel up there to see that.

From a line from a famous film, ' sir you are a poet, a dreamer of beautiful dreams' however I can't see this one happening in No9's lifetime, substitute it with 2007 maybe....

Well the way I see it, No.9 just has to make it back to 61B one last time under her own puff.

Call me a romantic, but given the history, the A4's on the 3 hour specials, the fame of No.9 and her importance to Scotland and of course the east coast route more generally, John Cameron's incredible stewardship of her, is there a more fitting send off than seeing her on shed on her final daily route with some familiar motive power just one last time?

Sure, its a lot to ask, the stars really are going to have to align, but if you are going to dream, you might as well go all in!

Practically, aside from BP being ready in time, there is little to prevent this from happening.

Steam Railway says July for end of ticket.
A1 trust is promoting a trip to Aberdeen on 14th March which will presumably need to use the turntable - gives a window of opportunity ?

A silly little memory that I have of number 9 is when it had hauled a tour to Ely and was due to water in the siding beside the station. There is quite often on-track plant in there and on this occasion a tamper was sat in there. The loco needed to get a few feet further into the siding to connect the hoses so the crew buffered up to the tamper, connected the air pipes, took the handbrake off the tamper and shoved it back a few feet. I have no idea if permission was gained before they did that. Probably the most modern thing she has ever hauled (albeit only a few feet and pushing rather than pulling) This was a good few years ago, probably in its last ticket.

#9 featured on TV last evening.......'Impossible Railways' Mr Cameron was interviewed on a few clips AND Mr Spamcans pride and joy was shown coupled to #9 at NVR.
I really do hope and wish that Mr Riley gets a chance eventually.

My favourite performance from No. 9, romping up the 1 in 100 gradient on the approach to Campden Tunnel on the return leg of the Cotswold Venturer on Saturday 16th February.
