Why would the NRM actually want it anyway seeing as though they have one already?

If it goes to the highest bidder my bet would be an art or classic car collector with large pockets and lots of space to plant their investment.

Plenty of these people in America, Russia and China. Maybe even a South American drug cartel - look at the fine art Pablo Escobar accumulated.

Can't actually see anyone in the UK either having the funds or wanting it. JH has one to play with already so that's the benevolent multi-millionaire (UK) probably ruled out. Can't see Exporail waiting five years for the endless fundraising of a private fund to come up with the loot.

The only realistic hope is that Exporail do what the NRM did with the Adams T3 and effectively wish to dispose of it ethically to an organisation where it would be cared for in a sustainable manner and in a relevant setting. That could put a UK organisation in the front seat.

So there you go - a possible new life for DoC in the Columbian rain forest!

Errm, an offer was on the table prior to her returning to Canada after the Great Gathering.

Lets see the colour of the money then if it comes to pass. My betting is on El Chapo.

Maybe his guys could 'de-asbestos' it and provide free insulation ready installed prior to kindly importing it to the UK FOC...

Which presumably didn’t need to include any shipping or asbestos certification costs since the GG had already covered them.

One of 6 in the world...can scarcely imagine what kind of money it would attract if it went on offer at Christies or Bonhams.

Rarity in itself does not necessarily mean it would command an astronomical price if there was little or no competition in the bidding process.

Would it be out of reach for a heritage railway to take ownership?

My God, I just had some chilling thoughts about what could happen if it gets bought by someone with a lot of money..............

Given their struggle to raise significantly smaller sums than appear likely, I think we should assume so.

IMO it would be a lot of money for even one of the larger lines to commit to buying just one loco but if there was a benefactor or two with the wherewithal, who knows?

Someone with the odd million or two to spare can buy a painting and hang it in their mansion or buy a huge diamond to adorn their current floozie. But what do you do with a locomotive? John Cameron's plan has run into an obstacle, which he may or may not be able to overcome, and anyway that is only after first running his locomotives for many years. Why would your drug baron or Russian millionaire want one?

So many things that are bought are bought with the expectation of increasing value and therefore are bought as investment pieces.

Stamps. Gold. Copper. Wine. Art. Locomotives?

I think it would attract quite a bit of competition.

It's possible it may generate interest abroad were it to go for open bidding. The museum may take the view that a "responsible new home" is the best bidder from its home country. I think the most favourable outcome would be a buyer along the lines of Mr Bunch, who might simply purchase the locomotive and ship it over. The overhaul and care of the locomotive could then be passed to a line or group in the way Swanage looks after his moguls. Could an individual line or group raise the cash to buy the locomotive in the time required? Probably not. Could they fund an overhaul and removal of asbestos off the back of an appeal over a period of time? Certainly - our movement is built on such arrangements.

As a recent graduate, disposable income has been fairly limited until recently. I think a certain 4489 locomotive appeal would be one one of the first places I would look to donate, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

That’s a new one. Buying a loco as an “investment”. After all, you see them at Sotheby’s on a regular basis.

Quite. When locos go up for sale in this country thousands of drug barons don't flock to purchase. Admittedly 4489 has a little more appeal for the international buyer than say an Austerity, but equally it's not 4472. Ask a layman what "Dominion of Canada" is and they'll probably say a country.

I think some people (rightly) want to gaurd themselves and the rest of us against getting ahead of ourselves, but equally, the suggestions get more and more preposterous. What next, the A4 at Disney World blowing bubbles out of its chimney and playing "A whole new world" on its chime whistle? Perhaps it will go abroad, but it's unlikely. There's more than one rich person in the UK than Mr Hosking.

There is a video here of it on display in Canada presumably before it changed buildings. Seems they let the public walk through the corridor tender and also you could get underneath. Looks immaculate

Interesting that they don't seem to have updated the interpretation panel since she came back from the UK.

Where would that really work though? That's a question to ask. If it was a Hall class, then I'd totally see the money spinning potential, but an A4 in foreign lands? What would it tie into? The USA has the T1 on the horizon to try and chase the world speed record as is but the various Class 1's are hostile to Steam or not depending on their mood or whims of their general managers.

Australia? There's a slew of other UK repatriations that could come from there as various companies got shot of their own engines to send down under with various engines slowly rusting away.

The Middle East might be a contender, what with Billionaires and their playthings, but there's no infrastructure out there for it.
