It was explained at the Convention on Saturday that the failure in April had four contributory causes, any one of which alone would have done no harm. They were: reduced lubrication, slight misalignment of the valve chamber, slight tapering of the liner, and too small gaps in the valve rings. At question time one person from the floor spoke out against any more high speed, but it was reiterated that the rationale for 90 mph running is not speed per se but easier pathing. The implication is that the Trust does still intend to resume 90 mph running sooner or later. The statement soon after the failure that speed was not a cause and that the failure would still have happened at lower speed, but just a bit later, was not reiterated but was implied by the explanation of the four contributory causes.

Yes, that is a good description of what was said at the convention. I was pleased to hear the Trust being open about these details, but I must confess disappointment that such a list of defects could be present in Tornado. I am inclined to think that, although speed per se was not the cause of the failure, it has brought to a head sloppy work when the inner valve gear was last overhauled

So engineering issues then. Reduced lubrication and tight valve liners seem pretty serious to me never mind anything else. What good fortune though that something just broke as a result and somewhere that the network could literally get around the problem.

Hopefully this will now bring to a close quite a difficult chapter in the Tornado story.

I'm wondering whether I should have put my post #201 in the Tornado thread, as it was less about future high speed running than about the defects, and the next few posts concern the latter.

Who were they booked with? We had full refunds from A1LST/UKRT for 2 trains and Pathfinder for the GEII.

I think he's saying that he had the refunds but it goes into the credit card account and not into the bank account. So it only gets used to reduce the credit card bill.

The implication is he lost out because of the cancellations. He didn't as he paid by credit card.

If you're using your banks credit card they should transfer any positive credit across after speaking with them !

Thank you, sadly it wasn't a Banks Card so its tied up, although 'someone else' doesn't seem to understand this.

Those times look a bit light on watering? 10 minutes at Lockerbie and 14 minutes at Appleby, then 10 minutes at Leeds.

I doubt that water is available at Plat 9 at Leeds. It does look like it is intended to do Appleby to York on one tank full.

22 minutes at Abington as well before Lockerbie. Personally I think 60163 is quite capable of doing Appleby to York on a full tank.

I think it's reasonable to assume that the A1 Trust folk won't run the thing down to the last 5 gallons, they'll make sure that there's no room for error and it wll be adequately watered somewhere along the way.:)

Bear in mind that each side of Tornado's tender has two hose connectors, so it can be filled quicker than most.
