All last looking really good, going to be a fantastic machine when she’s finished.

However, could someone enlighten me as to why the drilling and reaming of the slide bars wasn’t done as manufacture?

The clue is in the word align. The rear cylinder covers and the motion brackets support the ends of the slide bars. All these components have been newly manufactured at different times by different people, following which the rear cylinder covers were fitted to the cylinders and the motion brackets riveted to the main frame plates. There is therefore the risk however small of a dimensional error creeping in somewhere. It was therefore felt prudent to set up the slide bars correctly before drilling them to minimise any such risk of misalignment which could result from all components being pre drilled.

Seems reasonable. It’s so easy to pull the “if it’s made to drawing it should fit” but I suppose even if it doesn’t conform per DWG it will be guaranteed to fit if done this way.

I find all this very interesting. We at Project 22 are considering much the same questions. Understandable when you consider that the NBL Type 2 was designed to replace all the Praire Tanks on the Western Region. What we are considering is building for Heritage use but with regards for limited main line use. It will be too small to use on anything but branch lines anyway, but, piloting over the Devon banks would be interesting! The latest info from the RSSB is worth a read. https://www.rssb.co.uk/rgs/standards/RIS-2003-RST Iss 1.pdf

Thanks for the update. Really like the couple of old colour photos of class 3's from the 1960's. Really quite atmospheric.

82045 was moved into Bridgnorth Works yesterday (23rd January) in a faultless manoeuvre in cooperation with Allely's. Intention is for the SVR to get cracking on assembling the boiler and firebox as soon as the Stanier Mogul's is finished. In the meantime, 82045 engineers will continue to work towards completion of the locomotive as soon as possible. Neil Taylor is optimistic that work on the inner firebox should start fairly quickly. Current projected steaming date is mid-2021, so we can now say the year after next. The locomotive will be turned out in lined dark green livery with the post-1956 BR totem.

This is really good news. Getting the Loco under cover is a major milestone.

I had a look around the website but couldn't see a list of major unfunded components.. Have the trust issued one recently ?

£18,033.46 for a reversing shaft is remarkably precise!

What does a reversing shaft look like again? That feels like a lot if it is what I think it is...
