I see there is photos here already of said sleeper leaving the Swindon and Cricklade Rly, hadn't realized it had already gone. Where is it going to be based now ?

If you want glass for the coach, you need to measure the dimensions exactly and then go along to your local glass supplier and tell them what glass you want (really should be toughened glass, which is about double the price of ordinary glass). Assuming the corners of the glass are rounded, not all glass suppliers seem to be able to supply rounded corners easily so you should get a few quotes from different ones before you make a decision. It is unlikely anyone will have glass the exact sizes you want already.
As for sliding doors don't know, but I would worry about the body first. I did walk past it a few weeks ago and noticed the steel body side sheets had come adrift somewhat from the bottom side, so stuff like that you will need to sort out before worrying about internals.

I can recommend Carlyle Bus & Coach Ltd for the supply of toughened glass that is correct spec for preserved coaching stock. It has been used extensively by North Norfolk Railway and we have had no problems with the product. Carlyle compared favourably with other suppliers who have quoted, which is how they won our business at least!

They do rounded corners OK and can also put a tiny bevel on the edges of the glass (just like BR glass had) which makes it more comfortable to handle and fit.

You have to give them full specs for what you want obviously, so do that and they will give a very good service in my experience.

    Stuart,

What exactly are you going to do with this sleeping car even if you restore it to full health?

It has no value to run on a preserved railway and most lines are disposing of them anyway in favour of fixed volunteer accommodation.

In other words, no idea then.

Just out of interest Stuart, I know you've "started" several projects including that little Hunslet; before dropping them did you actually *do* anything physical towards their restoration?

Beg pardon, thought you had sold it, maybe I'm getting confused with that LMS chassis you claimed you were going to rebuild.

    Riiiight...

The Barclay was for sale according to the facebook page An offer of £4k didn't happen and price got as low as £2000 with then no takers. Moved from Tanat to Bolton workshop. Things seem to have taken a turn with the engine asked to leave. I presume it is still there

the no hope saloon that was never going to be got rid of was well got rid of in exchange for the sleeper. My 5p is that it will appear at the Tanat Valley in good time along with AB2352. Given the lack of facilities the coach would have some use for them .

Martin's account of events is correct. I would add that it's unlikely to be used as a PW coach as it's rather heavy (~42 tons) compared to say a flat with a 3-plank wagon or brake van behind. I also would not want to be sleeping in it unless there was very clear and readily available documentation to prove that all asbestos had been removed, not just sealed (or maybe not sealed!)

Where did you get I was offered £4k from I was offered £5k on a payment plan of £700 a month I think it was but then said person pulled out as the had no where for it to be stored.

Yes loco is still in bolton for now.

The saloon chassis was going to be used for either a item of narrow gauge to be mounted on rails on or as a large open wagon. But as Swindon have a body it was decided that they would make more use of it.

Accommodation / mess room / P.Way coach? What exactly is a P.Way coach? Will it contain P.Way or run on the P.Way? Is there any P.Way for it to run on? Does the P.Way want a P.Way coach? Have you asked the P.Way team? Who are the P.Way team?? How can it be a messroom and accommodation when it is a P.Way coach? Will there be chairs and ballast on the lower bunks and sleeping bags on the top?

If that sleeper is in the same condition as most of those laying about on preserved lines I would hazard a guess that not only is the body framing completely rotten, the cladding heavily corroded and its packed with hazardous material which you don't want to be near. I slept in one of the LMS ones at the Bluelbell for years and 20 years ago it was sealed with denzo tape and copious amounts of paint. Now from what I am told they are near to the end of their lives even as static accommodation and will be having at some point a one way trip to the skip. I cannot imagine that your recent acquisition will be any better. I cannot imagine that it will be in a fit state to run either. It may start off weighing 42 tons at the start of the trip but by the end only be 40 tons due to bits falling off. Therefore a career as a P.Way coach may not beckon.

At some point you will be responsible for disposing of that chemical-nightmare and it won't be cheap. I'm guessing the original owners are breathing one hell of a big sigh of relief that they managed to palm it off onto somebody else!

I think Stuart you are suffering from amnesia as your earlier appeal was to 'restore' the saloon underframe before rebuilding the body. You was asking questions on here about building body framing. Now you are saying it was only going to be used as a large open wagon?

I am coming to the conclusion you are in-fact Asbestos Alf with a new alias?

Alf was real and has left social media land . Stuart is also real but a different person albeit with an ambitious and very challenging goal . to be fair to him he said he would buy a loco and he has . He has also bought an item of rolling stock . Both come with a heavy reality check and need a lot of ££ spending . The one thing I struggle with is that Stuart has the WSR on his doorstep . Ryan Pope is rebuilding a boiler for his engine and if Stuart could fund a new boiler could give him an opportunity to get his hands dirty . Instead the loco and coach is in the fag end of beyond and he is reliant on others to do the work

    offer was £4-£5k .

Alf. the gift that kept on giving. Much like our new hero!

Where would the railway forums be without the entertainment given over the years with updates on the Luton-Dunstable line, the Irish DEMUs being regauged and then onto the J39 & Dean Goods new builds, ex-Barry 28xx resurrection, LMS saloon / flat wagon rebuild, the Barclay without a boiler? Then there was peak oil man, the Remembrance Line (with its fleet of gas producing R1s and a carriage shed made of old catenary masts) and Chilcompton station rebuild. What next - rebuild the Woodhead route with a full fleet of EM1s & EM2s?

The riches of dialling into specialist interest railway forums!

The 28xx restoration is currently taking place, albeit under a different owner.
