    I don't think there is a need to panic over this. The first line to be dealt with is the ECML from Kings Cross to Doncaster but it will be decades before the whole system is signal free.

    I think the first line the Cambrian already has the first version of it and since then Steam has not been on that line. I think that rather than steam locos being fitted with it, Steam will just avoid those lines that have it. (unless Network rail pays for the fitment). Just had a quick read up about the system on the Wikipedia page on it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Train_Control_System

    Seems hellishly expensive and complicated, and seems to offer little benefit unless trains are operating from one country to another (ie in Europe) so that both countries use the same system. As it is an EU directive can't it just be 'binned' now that we have binned EU membership.

    It will not need all lines to be converted. Once a few strategic lines are converted it will be difficult to plot a route through.

    Have a look at http://orr.gov.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0020/4907/pr08-partG_amends.pdf and Cl.2.2. The likes of NYMR, WCRC and others will have the costs underwritten by Network Rail. That's a good number of locos, for a start.

    Surely there's scope for some sort of dodge there, NYMR suddenly buying mainline steam locos at a knockdown price, get the equipment fitted, operate them for a season, then sell them back again for a small profit... :)
