That I am in no doubt of. The best of intentions can sometimes cloud the necessary pragmatic approach. I dare say the owner of the Crab has always had the best of intentions at heart, but ultimately for naught at present.

The only thing really stopping 42859 from coming back to life is money. Nothing that needs doing is a big deal and can easily be accomplished if sufficient pound notes are available.

A few posts before this the poster proclaimed with total certainty that the frames were definitely scrapped and no longer existed. This was confirmed by extensive research in the local scrapayards

Frames have turned up at Bury....

And that children is why you just don't believe what you read on the internet written by 'experts'!

Private ownership does become a bit of a bugbear if said owner cant provide the majority of funding. People are more likely to contribute monies to an organisation / trust whose sole raison d'etre is the restoration of a loco than they are to some bloke so he can restore 'his own' .
    Absoloutely goddamm right.

This is one of those threads that lots of people would quite like some information on what's happening with it, but basically nobody knows. I suspect nothing will happen with it unless there is a change of owner, but hopefully the existing owner can at least regain control over the bits that have gone astray so that it becomes viable as a restoration project one day.

Isnt the 4F at Bitton another of preservation's lost causes?

That isn't anything like the Crab. There are actually guys who are working on the loco unlike the crab. They are currently working on the tender. There was that issue with some ex shareholders who were claiming ownership last year.
They are a good group of guys though who really want to get the loco up and running.

That's another one that if I win the lottery (that I never buy a ticket for) I would help restore. It would be a Hughes/Fowler fest! Patriot, Fowler 2-6-4, Crab, 4F, the lost cause Jinty at MRC and if there was enough left over a Fowler 2P!

Dunluce Castle is probably as close to a Fowler 2P as most of us will ever see, I fancy.

The whole sorry saga is a warning to the preservation world, of not realising when you don't have the funds, or people to carry out the actual restoration , that you have to step aside and allow others to take it on, buying that engine from Barry is the easy bit, and moving it to a site and dismantling it is not that hard but when you have no active people and no fund raising to ensure you can keep the momentum going that's when the problems start, I can think of several instances where engines are now no hopers because of this problem, but the owner always seem to have unrealistic plans and expectations.

    Your spelling is correct!

However it's very unlikely she will ever steam again, and even if she did, there would be a slight issue of gauge to join Gav's gala!

Interesting, if a little confusing piece in SR this month. The below is off the top of my head so don't shoot the messenger...

It appears that in 2015 the place where the frames etc had been moved to from Binbrook (Tuxford??) needed to be cleared but the site owner could not get in touch with the owner of the Crab who had moved abroad (allegedly owing cash for storage which hasn't been paid) and thus scrapping beckoned again, however, an anonymous third party had now bought the frames (from whom is unclear) and recovered the driving wheels which was all moved to a private site in Manchester in 2015 and then moved to the ELR in September 2018. Suggests very long term restoration and a new welded boiler.... SR have agreed to maintain the anonymity of the new owner.

Previous owner has been contacted for comment and none been forthcoming so far.

Something like that anyway - buy SR and draw your own conclusions!
