That is both totally inflammatory and unnecessary and you should apologise.

Whatever you may think of a project, ordinary everyday folk have worked on that project.

Spare a thought for the sleepless nights, hard work, and toil they will have had.

I personally would like to extend a well done to the GWS at Didcot and look forward to seeing it in GWR green in due course.

Please look at my previous post, where I state that I didn't wish to denigrate the work undertaken by the GWS. I just feel that compared to a new A1 running, a Patriot & a P2 not far from running and the excellent progress on the 3mt, Brighton Atlantic G5 and others that a converted Hall isn't as big of a 'moment' in preservation. Its worth applauding definitely and to reiterate she'll be a fine sight when in steam.

Maybe if you had avoided using the words 'Frankenstein's Hall' your post might not have raised eyebrows so easily.

The Saint looks lovely and a credit to all who worked on the project. Looking forward to seeing her steam and emerging in Great Western livery.

    “Frankenstein’s Hall”

    “I didn’t wish to denigrate”

Oh, that’s okay then. My mistake.

    Seriously? Come on.

    They deserve a proper apology.

Sorry to say but I'll stand with @williamfj2 on this one . If you want to take a locomotive and butcher it to make something else then accept there will be voices of discontent on the subject

to do it twice and then a third time sacrificing engines at the same time which could have had a future is something I find hard to accept . Preservation and new builds have shown the ease with which new rolling chassis have been made

You’re both entitled to hold views.

What I find lacking is manners and tact. “Frankenstein’s Hall”, “butchered” - sorry, it doesn’t wash with me that strong feelings automatically override civility.

so @S.A.C. Martin how would you politely describe taken engines , separating them into parts and then building something from them to look like something else . It may seem impolite but "body snatching" and "Frankenstein" are words that bring to life what is happening in a way that everyone understands

2999 may be with us, however 4942 was sacrificed . the county sees 7927 and 48518 , the Night Owl 2861 etc

I'm not often accused of being over polite, but there's no point in using over dramatic language to unneccessarily offend. I imagine the GWS and its supporters would use words like “donor”, “transplant”, and “graft” to describe its work here.

After all, would you describe a child as a freak if they've needed a kidney transplant?

As a Saint Partner and supporter of the project for over 20 years some of the criticism here seems quite surprising. Everyone involved with the project at Didcot deserve congratulating, it has taken a while but 2999 will wow the crowds wherever it might perform. After all there are another 18 GWR Halls for us to enjoy. Roll on the Grange!

I've never seen a Saint but will now have the opportunity to do so. There are multiple 8Fs In preservation, we've even re-exported one due to lack of U.K. interest. The only rebuild which could be described as 'Frankenstein' is the butchered 5193 at the W.S.R. , but was that only another Prairie.

I have - politely - expressed my displeasure of 48518 elsewhere on Nat pres without resorting to overly emotive language.

I find it bewildering and incredulous that the most vocal criticisms have suddenly risen on the eve of the locomotives unveiling. It’s just poor form, IMO.

Given the degree of 'standardisation' of parts exercised by Swindon I would have thought that in the modern idiom 'recycled' would be an appropriate term for the donor parts / locos.

I agree. Had 111 Viscount Churchill, 4900 Saint Martin or one of the early Granges survived, all recycled from earlier locomotives, would they have attracted a similar level of opprobrium. I think not. What was good enough for Swindon should be good enough for us today. Well done Didcot for a terrific job - lets hope we can see her on the SVR with the Great Western set in the not too distant future.

Sorry some people are underwhelmed by today’s Didcot event. Having donated a fair sum towards this project some thirty ( can that really be true?) I am very pleased and relieved to see it finally taking shape. Doesn’t compare withth

Well certainly not the roll-out of a new build but well done to all at Didcot for another little step towards seeing Lady of Legend in action. I can't believe it was about 25 years or more when I made a significant donation to the project- I was doubting whether I would live long enough to see it (!) so today was very pleasing and thanks to the fellahs for moving the loco round to enable a variety of views. Its been slow and still some way to go but there's never anything gained in life by being negative so thank you GWS!

Superb stuff! So can anyone say what's left to do before we see it in action?
