Over the years many redundant steam locos were dumped rather than scrapped in New Zealand. Some have been unearthed in recent years and at least one, a Rogers 2-4-0, restored to running order. Well, they're at it again digging up a pair of 2-6-2's buried since 1927 https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/10...-southland-for-the-first-time-in-nine-decades There is a bit more about the locos on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NZR_V_class and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branxholme_locomotive_dump
    Cheers,
    Ray.

A good looking loco in its days.
There was a website with details of many of the dumped locos in NZ and their current status but it sems to have dissapeared a few years ago.

There's a small difference in that the Rogers K (and many of the other locos) were deliberately dumped for river bank stabilisation, whilst the Waimarie essentially just sunk at moorings after being abandoned - though I guess not much difference in restoration effort needed!

I came across these bits at Fielding some years ago; I think from a V class 2-6-2, though I am not sure if they are still there as the Fielding Society had to vacate their base.

The Wiki page I referred to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NZR_V_class suggests that the remains of 3 V class locos recovered in 1998 for spares for V132 at Fielding were scrapped in 2014. Could these be the ones you photographed? Seems a shame after all the effort of recovering them.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

If anyone has a spare hour this is a fascinating video showing what was involved in recoevering the paddle steamer.

Here's a picture of the restored Rogers 2-4-0 running on the Plains Railway,Ashburton on the South Island on 23/11/2013.I believe this organisation has another of the same class awaiting restoration.

I photographed K92, another of the Rogers 2-4-2's extracted from a river when it was living in the goods shed at Gore, South Island, back in 2000. At that stage it was owned by the chap who ran the Croydon Aircraft Company, who specialise in DeHaviland aircraft restorations. The plan at the time was to have it as an exhibit at a recreated railway station adjacent to his airfield, but that seems to have not gone ahead , so it only appears to see occasional use at shows on temporary track now.
Unfortunately I can't post any of the photos, as this site won't let me ..............
