That seems rather counter-intuitive as there is comparatively little "I" for a bus route.

Bingo. buses get caught in traffic. The way to encourage public transport uptake is that it be both cheaper and faster than having a car.
People like trains better than buses. Surely we don’t need to debate that on here of all places?

As for the bridge, IMHO it makes more sense to lift it out and repair it off site. It becomes more of a known quantity then.

Latest Main Line has just dropped through the front door, and, apart from saying that work on the canal bridge is likely to start this Autumn, it just states that the latest news will be posted on the website. Given likely Press Dates for ML, I'm therefore assuming that the current plan is to restore the bridge in situ and not lift it out after all. If the potential contractors have suggested that as the cheapest option after all, I would think they would follow their advice .

The new edition of Steam Railway has a piece on the rebuilding - on the west side of the line - of the loco shed at Loughborough. The "end of 2019" is mentioned as when they hope to start the rebuilding work (subject to funding), which would then free up the eastern side of the trackbed for the link to the north.

  6. You have ignored 'convenience'. More than anything people like that - and they are prepared to put up with disruption to have that, plus their own space. That's why 'people' like cars better than trains or buses. Not everybody lives in a town with easily accessible rail links, for starters.
Here is a place occupied by railway enthusiasts, not 'people'. There's a big difference. And I would seriously reserve judgement if you are implying that every single poster on here would always prefer to travel by train in every circumstance.

Most people who live far from the London Bubble and other heavily populated areas of the country, do not have the choice of main line trains. Large areas of the SW are very many miles from a main rail line. Cars are convenient and unless you are travelling to the places where parking is either extortionate and well contested then cars earn their keep on longer journeys.

This applies to buses as well. I live in a built-up area with one of the main roads into Wimborne within fifty yards, but to catch a bus into Wimborne I'd need to walk a mile in the opposite direction, and Wimborne is only a mile and a half away!

    Good news indeed.

After such a good day at the gala on Sunday I made an online donation to the railway on Monday.
Hopefully others will have donated likewise therefore boosting the funds for the bridge. <BJ>

Latest FoGCML magazine suggests that shot-blasting of the metalwork on the canal bridge is likely to take place "this winter" which will enable Contactors to quote for the full job more easily.
After the canal bridge it seems that the erection of the new shed will be the next job on the "Gap" list..........

It is great to see that progress is being made - nothing like a collection of Orange Jackets on -site!

Thanks for posting the link. A fascinating website with so many interesting photographs. Something to browse through over Christmas instead of watching the rubbish on the TV!

The East side of the Canal bridge seems to be in the poorest condition. DSCF8164.JPG

Are the pictures in #715 and #717 the same bridge? The tops of the girders look very curved in 717 and hardly if at all in 715.

Hi Mellish - Yes it is the same bridge - the tops of the outer girders are straight, the central girder is curved.
