Just been announced on their FB page, unfortunately clan line has failed so won't be running the BBP, but repairs are being done to be ready for Thursdays tour.

They need to get to a wheel lathe so let's keep our fingers crossed. Remember this is not Carnforth or Tyseley but a mainline loco run by a group of volunteers

In fairness it is a post from the MNLPS that says repairs are in hand. Volunteers maybe but that doesn't stop them being one of the most professional and well organised owning group in the country.

I don't think there is any suggestion otherwise. Everyone knows what a dedicated and capable bunch take care of CL. I don't think they have their own wheel lathe though!

''We are sorry to announce that, due to failing our Fitness To Run examination with a problem on the tender tyres, we will be unable to haul tomorrow's trip for Belmond. We apologise to our customers for this, and we are working hard to get the damage repaired for the following trip''.

Good luck to the MNLPS team. Hope all goes well. <BJ>

Indeed. I am sure that the MNLPS will do what it can. And given that by all accounts the damage occurred after its last FTR exam and at some point on its travels to Wales and back for the Royal Train, perhaps Network Rail will feel that they should help to facilitate the repairs.

May I please request that we stop any hare running as to the likely cause of this failure, and actions being taken. The facts are that Clan Line passed its previous FTR, but failed the most recent one, for the reason we have published. So it is obvious that the damage occurred between the two FTR exams. The operation that came between was actually the 8th December Belmond Pullman trip, which many will know took an unusual circuitous route round south and west London and the Chilterns. The why, where and who is responsible for the damage is pure speculation at the moment; investigations are thorough and continuing, and finger-pointing benefits nobody. In the meantime rest assured that much midnight oil is being burned to try to get '28 on the front of the train to Sherborne on Thursday.

Perhaps you'd like to read the post from derby2 immediately before yours before engaging in baseless speculation.

It was gauged for Kent in March when the normal route was closed. The picture was taken at Graveney crossing.

That was then, this is now. Gauging clearance only lasts for a year before needing to be done again. We are working with NR on an on-going basis to have our 'usual' or 'intended' routes to be cleared (or otherwise) for 35028 operation. Anything new and short-notice will always be problematical.

So the gauging for the March trip must have been done at least 4 months before the run round Kent or was there another reason for the alternative route?

No one, just the usual uninformed speculation.
