Agree with you! With their big wheels they look so impressive

 

I think this group are getting a move on - there has been a significant increase in the "management" and the frames are looking good with stretchers etc in place. Their fundraising is increasing year on year and they obviously have good links with the A1SLT operation. My interest is actually in the possibility of, eventually, having a separate B17/5 boiler cladding, to be used later on! I think a streamlined 4-6-0 will stimulate even more interest in view of the fascination with A 4's by the general public..... and the sad decline in numbers of " in service" A4's.

 

The things I wouldn't give to see a B17/5...

Despite sacking their manager yesterday, Man Utd remain remarkably upbeat "Once the boiler cladding is fitted, fund raising will become the main focus of our efforts and if we can raise just £1 from each supporter the engine could be up and running within a few years"

(Just realised they are talking about the football team supporters ..... but even so !)

 

They've been trotting that line out for a number of years now. I think they had an advert or article in the Man Utd supporters magazine some time ago, and if they are still trying to attract supporters, I think it shows that the supporters aren't really bothered about a steam loco even if it is named after their club!

Alternatively, a name change to Liverpool or Manchester City might help! I suppose if they are building a full size static model of a "Footballer" B17 (which it seems to me that's all they are doing) then it would not be quite such a financial mountain to climb.
Regarding the 2 streamlined B17s, I understood that these locos were shrouded mainly for publicity purposes and that the streamlining didn't do anything for their performance as they didn't travel fast enough! I'm happy to be corrected on this but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

 

I'm sure Kinghambranch is quite correct.....but publicity was quite important to get passengers originally.....and supporters/donations latterly.

 

The streamlining that Gresley employed had one very obvious and very useful purpose. Smoke deflection. There is an argument that if you want to avoid drifting smoke, the Bugatti front end was always worth fitting. It worked well on the A4s, P2s and the streamlined B17s, but only being applied to two of the latter class was bound to eventually lead to them being brought in line with the others and not the other way around.

 

The "Sandys" were good looking locos and very common on both the GE and GN main lines where I used to live.
61652 Darlington and 61653 could be seen four times a day shuttling back and forth on the CBE. All of the class could be
seen in north London apart from those based at march at March which normally worked to Doncaster and Sheffield.

In 1958 I needed two to see all of the class. One spring morning I got on my bike and cycled to 14A then on to 14D/34E, then
onto that Cathedral of steam 81A always with a couple of 47XX on the canal side entrance to the shed. Lastly I visited 1A,
parking my bicycle next to the pair of G2A's that always seemed to be parked at the back of the shed.

Into the roundhouse I walked and there in front of me was 61643 Champion Lodge of March an extraordinary cop, I doubt if
I shall ever find out what it was doing there, almost certainly on a special working, sadly I never did see 61620 Clumber.

Interestingly the Sandys were outlived by the K2's and the B12 61572-------------------happy memories.

Get Manchester City and the Gallagher brothers involved. Liam could polish it up for it's first public appearance. He would really make it sheeeeeiiiiiiiiiinnnnnne.

 

Fantastic pictures especially the one showing that the end of the overall roof at Norwich Thorpe was glazed once upon a time. Norwich City would have been the obvious choice for the loco name, if they wanted to tap into that market. the loco is far more associated with that part of the world and Norwich city FC have quite a tightnit bunch of fans who I suspect might have been more interested...The local press would have run stories on it too
