My footage of her at speed through Grateley and Tisbury. What an incredible year Clan Line has had. Merry Christmas to all and let's hope she keeps it up for 2019. Enjoy.

Clan Line safely back to Victoria on time. Well done to all concerned today and over the last couple of nail biting days. <BJ>

Looking at my shots today it's just struck me that 35028 had no high-intensity headlight today - a nice change for main line steam. I'm not sure of the rules, but I had assumed all locos were required to display them these days.

She has got one. My understanding is the bulbs in the marker lights were changed during the previous overhaul to give an acceptable level of light. They looked fairly bright coming into Sherborne last night.

Another brilliant day with Clan Line. Despite some appalling operational decisions the crews managed to give us some lively spells.

West of Basingstoke we flew down to Salisbury (Worting to Laverstock in 28 minutes - an average of a mph under 70) and kept the old ACE timings until Salisbury decided we needed to hang around outside. The hill climbing each way west of Salisbury was quite special (37 into Buckhorn Weston Tunnel from a start at Gillingham plus 37 up to Milborne Port from a slow pass of Templecombe). The running time of 44 min from Sherborne to Salisbury was unexpected and fast. All this with 12 for 460 tons gross.

Operational nonsense? Well, we were held for so long before Clapham that we lost our path and then followed a stopper all the way to Addlestone Junc. That screwed up our fast line path between Woking and Basingstoke that we only gained part way down. And then they tried to send us through Basingstoke on the fast where there was a 'prohibit' for the loco.

Nevertheless the crews worked hard to give us a good day and the combo of UKRT/DBC/MNLPS have to be thanked for yet another special time with steam......and Happy 70th Birthday Clan Line.

Oh for a rake of green stock in that Tisbury shot. Could have been the ACE.

Sounds like NR's all-too-frequent signalling ineptitude struck again! Did you stand outside Basingstoke and contact the signaller, or was the error realised before then?

We were rolling up to the stop signal when it cleared for the fast so Wayne Thompson stopped the train and they contacted the signaller with a bit of advice on how to route the train. Not sure that NR would take kindly to a bill for the repaint of the loco's cylinders had it gone through.

After the FTR failure because of the tender wheel damage, what special conditions would have applied to the short run from Stewart's Lane to Selhurst? The RTT page shows "Timed for 74mph max" which seems a funny number.

And what is the significance of the "70" on one of the headcode discs?

I know Wayne is a regular on Clan Line but does a driver have to have that sort of knowledge about where a loco can go? I know in steam days they didn't it was up to the running foreman at the shed to allocate the correct engine.

The 'STN', which is the NR notice which comes out for all charters, has the schedule for the day. This usually includes stock movements prior to and afterwards, other loco movements ie diesel loco movements, and amongst other things any speed restrictions to be observed other than the normal ones.
For example, yesterday included 30mph Down Slow at West Byfleet. 30mph through both down platforms at Woking. 30mph through the down slow platforms at both Brookwood and Winchfield, these are included even though we were booked fast line. As it was I had to observe the 30 through Brookwood because we were sent slow line to there. We were sent out onto the fast at Brookwood (40mph) but 30 it was until the loco cleared the platform.
Next on the list was the 'prohibit' through the Down fast platform at Basingstoke, needless to say this had not been flagged up for the Basingstoke signallers.
Hope this gives an idea, there were others of course and other things on the STN, but for another day.
