I think one got on to Padd/Oxford service back in the day and possibly Waterloo Exeter before they went over to units.

I remember one in Scotrail colours on the Waterloo - Exeter turn, transferred straight south and not repainted.

An impromptu visit to the Mid Hants today for their Christmas Leave event to try out a new toy, and a quick shot of the driver of 76017 acknowledging the right away from the guard.

Good to see @Duty Druid enjoying himself too, albeit very briefly!

That's Dave Pallett, as seen recently on "River Walks" on BBC South... Will try to get the image of Duty Druid briefly enjoying himself out of my mind now....
Christmas Leave continues tomorrow, although I am back to work so can't join in the fun!

Didn't the Mid-Hants line close well into the BR Blue era? :)

A bit of news about services today from the MHR Twitter feed. I guess 76017 has failed:

    It’s 925 that’s gone bang today.

Apologies. I stand corrected. I thought 76017 was in use again today.

We discussed a similar gauge glass failure on 925 back in September. Back then I was surprised that such a thing would result in a failure of a loco. Changing gauge glasses ought to be routine for the crew. Don't MHR locos carry spares for such an event? Back in September the reason given as I understand it was that the valves didn't shut off properly. Hasn't this been fixed? Burst gauge glasses aren't that common if they are changed regularly, usually at a washout. I've only had three instances in 40 years. Is there an alignment problem to sort out?
Tom will no doubt be able to give better info but I believe that on the Bluebell in times past, on a fireman's exam the inspector used to deliberately break a gauge glass of a loco in steam and expect the fireman to change it as part of his exam. Not quite as exciting on the NYMR, we simply had to change one on a loco out of steam!

Sadly not part of the test any more. (Though we get to do other fun things on our firing tests, like drive and fire while the driver simulates having passed out, to check you can safely control a train underway to the next safe point to stop).

It did strike me as interesting that 925 had broken two glasses in quick succession. I don't think we would fail a loco for that, unless there was some obvious deeper seated reason. I've never had one break on me "in anger" as it were, so two in a few months seems somewhat notable.

Popped over to M4M and Ropley this evening; last visit this year. Noted these on the 'naughty step' at Ropley!
Thanks to all at the railway for working so hard in order to keep these venerable machines working.

I would happily see a "Brush 4" in any of its liveries, so long as I could see it about to join the main line at Winchester Junction with a train from Alton............
