I have no idea as to a location or date of these 2 photos unearthed during a desk tidy session today.
Are the wagons in the first photo NER?

The second one is Wellingborough 1898 after a collision with a runaway trolley. Similar pictures of the accident in Arthur Trevena's 'Trains in Trouble' Volume 2.

The upside down wagon in the first photo has Midland 10074 on the builder's plate, and the loco looks like a Kirtley outside framed 0-6-0. A quick look on Google comes up with an accident at Wymondham Junction involving Kirtley 700 class no. 871 on 3rd December 1892, which crashed and demolished the signal box. Whether that is correct or not, I don't know, but it seems plausible.

Yes that is the one. There is a different view of the same accident in 'Trains in Trouble' Volume 6. According to that book 871 was working a goods train, although the reason for the accident is not given. The box and lever frame were so badly damaged that a temporary ground frame was installed and hand signalling used for some time, with the box and frame being completely replaced at a later date.
