Don't forget that there are now tanks at Minffordd as well as T-Y-B. On that issue of water, how much time was spent by the 'uphill' trains waiting in loops for gravity trains to pass, wasting water? Timetabling today can build in watering stops and allow better regulation of journeys

There was only one loop then. Water stops were booked to take something ridiculous on the way up like 3 minutes. Speeds were probably around 10mph on the track back then too. Don't forget the loco will now be creating vacuum as well. So more water consumption there. The only option would be to only pull really light loads.

Minffordd is a solution but it is very slow. I suspect you'd struggle to reach the valve in its current form too. It also doesn't fix the issue on the top section.

It is probably better you build some water capacity into the tender somehow.

What are the consequences for the FWHR if the line from Afon Wen to Bangor is reopened? Wouldn't it force the WHR to terminate at Dinas?

Suspect even if by some miracle they can get funding, unlikely in current political mess, it's not going happen for a long time if ever, I doubt the FWHR would have built the new Caernarfon Station otherwise.

Read somewhere (might have been the 'Isengard' site) that the new Caernarfon Station building was built leaving sufficient space to accommodate a SG line passed it, so presumably it could still serve a function to something?

While in wishful thinking mode, there's always the Nantle Tramway route into Caernarfon!!! ;)

And a TOC having running powers over the FWHR. Possible in principle, if unlikely.

If the ORR is content with the arrangements for the FWHR itself, including the flat crossing at Porthmadog, why not a mixed-gauge section?

Logically, none. But given the degree of risk aversion on Britain’s railways (how long has it taken to get tram train to happen, and then at a pathetically small scale?), I just find it hard to imagine.

I think the bigger issue might be fitting a railway though the delicatessen in Morrisons.
