Two signal boxes would be brilliant, I think that retaining wall by the new shed needs some work to stabilise it, the roots and vegetation growing out of it won't do it any good, one thing I've been wondering is the height of the new shed seems to be excessive, it looks to dwarf out the station building from certain viewpoints, I understand there is limited space to work with but it does dominate the site a little. I also wonder in the future if a hydroelectric scheme could be reimplemented by the volunteers to power bits of the station, as the original did, it would reduce your operating bills and that sort of project attracts grants.

There's a new kid on the block at KSE, 1949 Peckett 2111 'Lytham St Annes', ex Blackpool gas works, it was recently restored at butterley in 2017, a close works number to long time KSE resident 2084 'F.C Tingey'. Will be a nice addition to the growing collection for stainmore.

    Other goings on are:
Sheds getting fitted out with track, new pointwork is getting sorted
Station roof and doors are getting renovated (properly this time)
A 2nd water crane for the steam shed roads is underway, for operational flexibility.

Peckett 2111 was steam tested at Kirkby Stephen East on Thursday 28. Everything went very well. The locomotive will be at KSE for an initial period of a year.

The second water crane is in fact a water column and was at Darlington North Road so it has a suitable pedigree. The water main for this will be laid very soon.

We are awaiting a delivery of stone after which we can continue to line and level track, in particular the tandem turnout leading into the new shed. The track that has been put into the shed on the north side is a temporary arrangement using oddments of rail and sleepers that are about serviceable. This is to enable us to get some stock inside. FB rail for the installation of the south road will be ordered shortly. This will be a permanent installation. Concrete flooring will then follow as soon as possible. When funds permit the north side temporary track will come out and FB rail laid here.

As well as taking delivery of Peckett 2111 we have also received two wagons from Shildon. One is a North Eastern Railway loco sand wagon, the second is a ballast brake. Both are appropriate wagons for the project. Later this year NER luggage composite 1111 owned by the LNERCA will join the collection at KSE on a long term loan. It will be restored and become part of a projected NER passenger rake. The acquisition of other rolling stock is being negotiatedd and when there is some news I will post it here.

Lots of things going on at Kirkby Stephen:

-Concrete floor in the shed is going in
-original NER rolling stock such as bogie stores van 5523 is in the shed and restoration has begun
-an NER grounded body, five compartment third 2051 has been recovered, adding to the ever growing collection of authentic NER stock

    Some news from the provinces:
Another LNER teak has been aquired from the LNER coach association, Gresley brake third 3669, on a short term loan and moved from nymr (pictures up on the facebook page), the great thing about this coach is that it's already restored and awaiting passengers over Easter, this will be the first time a teak has operated at Kirkby Stephen in preservation.

Also another acquisition (KSR are amassing a serious collection of NER/LNER stock here)
NER six wheel composite 1111 on a long term 30 year loan for restoration and moved from levisham, needs a lot of work and spent it's final days as a tool van so it lost its centre wheelset, though they have bits to reinstate it.

The concreting in the workshop has been completed also, very exciting few years ahead for SRC!

Called by last saturday after the CME failure, progress is tremendous, new shed a really useful addition, water tower very realistic, this project continues to lay sold foundations and has sensible priorities.

It is the HIGHWAYS AGENCY. that carried out the infilling, not the HRE. Repair costs approx £5k .

Easily done. I suspect HA will justify spending £125k as removing any future maintenance costs! It has also been reported that they advised local MP that the infill would be removed free of charge if the Railway was ever reinstated !

Unless they are trunk roads road maintenance is nothing to do with the HA and all to do with CCC.

Cumbrian roads are bloody awful (you should try and cycle on them), myself and MrsGWR4707 always joke you can tell by the metre when you have entered Cumbria as the roads immediately go to pot!

A charge, I fear, which could rrasonably be made pretty much anywhere, these days. Our roads (Sussex) have always 'enjoyed a certain reputation' regarding potholes, but I doubt they've been as bad as now since the first tarmacadam was slapped down, many moons ago. Maybe someone in the corridors of power has a hankering for conditions amenable to restoration of another of those opportunities of yore .... that of the highwayman. :Meh:
