Blimey, I didn't know that there were so many documentaries about the MHR. This one was filmed the year I was born. Thanks for sharing the links on here.

The thing about watching some of these old footage is the number of people who are not around now, either moved on to pastures new, or in a few cases to the celestial railway and of course we are all older, and to see people you knew personally from those days gives it a bit of a shock, when you think how many years have passed .

Loco roster for February and the first weekend of March has been posted on the MHR website. Duties shared by 41312, 92212 and the Hampshire Unit.
The Feb half term week will see 92212 and the Hampshire unit in use. Surely a two steam service would be a bigger attraction over the holiday?

Nice to see a great article about the S15's 499 and 506 in the new issue of Heritage Railway (out yesterday).

I can't imagine February half term being especially busy. And, on a personal level, I quite like the 2H unit.

Might be less passengers without Alton and not worth the extra steaming costs?

I love the 205 and it's probably the a more authentic experience of the line than the steam trains.

Also the best things about the diesels is that hardly anybody else rides on them! :p

I filmed the Hampshire unit departing from M4M a few years ago on a beautiful autumn day. The only people in the shot were station porters dressed appropriately.

It was a timely scene typical of the mid 1960s. Wonderful stuff. <BJ>

all you have to do now is to wait till the Great NRM sell off, get (30) 245 build two Maunsel push pull coaches and you can then recreate another authentic mode of transport on the Mid Hants

Looked at this and whilst that would be amazing 245 is, unfortunately, a short frame M7 and therefore not able to convert to push pull.

Although nothing is impossible in preservation these days. Just need a generous benefactor.

Or just get a couple of LSWR Non-Corridor coaches together and run round at each end...

I like the idea of the MHR getting hold of the surviving LSWR T1 Boiler and building the rest of either a T1 or an A12 to go with it... A12 might be more useful on the MHR than a T1.

And why build a Maunsell Push-Pull set when we already have an Ironclad that could be converted? And when there's already a Maunsell driving trailer in preservation... and we used to have it too...

Dont Swanage already have a push pull set? Sure they would be open to donations for it .

245 has already been involved in a type of "Push-pull" working on the MHR.
When she visited for the 1989 LSWR Gala she was pushed and pulled around by 31874. ;) This is the only picture I could find on the internet:

They do and the Long frame M7 to go with it. If memory serves me right the driving trailer came from the MHR. I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong.

The set is in dry off site storage waiting for its turn and a probably a large grant or donation. Unless the donation is big enough to totally change priorities there is at least two other coaches to be done first. A second Maunsell open third just back from Ramparts to be fitted out inside and then the Bullied Brake coach to complete the only surviving Bullied three coach set in preservation. This latter vehicle will be a big job.

I don't expect the turn for the push pull set will come around soon unless there is a truly remarkable donation. I suppose it's bad form to solicit for SR donations on a MHR thread so I'll get my coat........

BTW we also have an Ironclad in dry storage. Be nice to see a set behind the T3 one day....

Although using the Mid Hants thread for Swanage items, the Push Pull vehicle can be seen here at 16 mins 40 secs.
The rest of the Newsrail video from November 1993 is worth watching.

Meanwhile, back in the real world......

Up at the new sidings, the stop blocks are in & the point radii adjusted so that almost anything can go in road 2, so leveling & ballasting & tamping should soon follow, & if I've been reading things right, the demolition of Butts Bridge is due to begin on Friday........
