It is lubricated when cutting, but I think it chatters very slightly anyway, partly due to the fact that the thing is about 500 years old now! You are correct it is very important to have the two sides similar, I have respect for the guys (there are three of them) who can operate it. When it finds "hard" metal within wheelsets, which is becoming increasingly common given their advancing age, the whole building shudders ever so slightly which is amusing at lunch time given that the mess hut is almost above the machine!

I think when the lathe turned up in a very sorry state it was said that it originally was installed in Ashford and was 1940s vintage. I could well be wrong as that was a long time ago when it arrived.

Does it really matter if there a few chatter marks? After a few miles in traffic they will all disappear and as long as the diameter and profiles are correct the wheelset is good to go.

I was told many years ago by the NDT inspector at Tyseley that chatter marks actually speed up the work hardening process, too good a finish was detrimental to that process.

Other than 43106, I wonder what visitors will be at this year's 'That's Yer Lot' Gala.

    Hoping for a B1...

Shall we rename the two stations Temple Meads and Parkway to avoid confusion in the future?!? Every year the NNR station still gets Norwich passengers!

You'd think clues like the steam engines and 'North Norfolk Railway' signs, together with the Network rail signs on the other side of the road, would be enough to make it clear which station is which...

In another thread - you know the soap opera one - there is discussion about peoples observations when visiting heritage lines. This does add truth to the fact that many are not as observant as some folk believe.

What is very cruel is to sit in the NNR station with the railcar carrying "Norwich" on the destination blind!

Much kinder to have more sensible destinations on there like "Heysham Sea Terminal for IOM"!

I was stood on Sheringham platform when the N2 was sat at the head of the quad arts and someone came running up and asked if it was the train to Norwich.

    `
I've had a similar instance at Pickering on the NYMR. Admitted there wasn't a train in at the time. But had a cyclist ask, "Can I get a train to York from here?" My reply being, "There hasn't been one to York from in over 50 years." Which caused an amount of bafflement with the cyclist.....

I suppose to be fair to the public, some of network rails rural stations have now been so beautifully restored with adopted gardens etc that if no trains are present then there probably isn't all that much difference between heritage and mainline stations. If you were cycling through an area for the first time I can conceivably imagine stumbling across a pieceful stone station with two empty platforms and being non the wiser.

However going by the displays at York Stn you can get one from York to Pickering. Looks a bit like a Coastliner bus though.;):)

Quite agree Bryan, as in the past I've visited Pickering that way in the closed season.
