    On the 45th!
I was there that day! Stood on top of Shotlock Hill tunnel. Our Mk1 Cortina was gridlocked too.

The gridlock would be worse today, not from more cars, but from the fact that modern cars are that much bigger.
Think of a 1960's Mini against the latest version.
And then you will have all the SUV's as well.

Looking at the pictures of No. 45596 "Bahamas" it`s unpainted wheel rims stand out from the usual painted ones. But I really like it, looks very great! :) Could be interesting to see other british steam locomotives with unpainted wheel rims too. It gives the engine some really stylish "shoes" ;)

Polished bare metal wheel rims and burnished buffers and pipework was known as exhibition finish on the LMS and only applied to a few locomotives as the name suggests. I don't personally like it and would much prefer to see it as it would have emerged from Crewe Works after an overhaul in BR days but I'm only one member and the majority clearly like it as it is.

I've always thought the best example of this in recent times has been Mallard vs Bittern and Dominion of Canada. The red wheels look far better surrounded by bare metal rims for me.

    Agree!:)
Imagine a Bulleid pacific with bare metal rims. Then you can at least catch sight of the wheels from a distance!;) (But ,of course nothing wrong with the appearance they already have!)

You could probably get an original Mini inside the modern one: I saw a brand new Polo yesterday and it is easily as big as the original Golf.

Here's something I've been wondering, as someone who's occasionally lived and has connections to Stockport: Why is 45596 considered to have such connections to the town? It seems to have been held with a lot of affection by enthusiasts there, but why? Obviously Edgeley was its final shed (and I think every photo I've seen had a 9B shed plate), but it didn't seem to be there especially long. What's the reason? I quite like that it is, but I can't see quite why.

9B was primarily a freight shed and as their only ‘namer’ it became a bit of a pet engine. The move to preserve her kicked off with a letter to the Manchester Evening News from a Stockport engineman. The fund raising was taken on by a Williams and Deacons Bank Manager, George Davies, who became the first chairman and the rest is history as they say. While the purchase money was being acquired it was stored at the back of the shed and I think, stories about hot boxes being fed back to Crewe as a reason why it couldn’t be moved.
I became a member when I was collared by the Edgerly shedmaster, Terry Smith, who asked to see my permit. A bit odd I thought as I’d been there quite a few times and never been asked before. When I confessed that I hadn’t got one he said he it was no problem as he could provide one but it would cost 10 bob (50p) and I would need to fill in a form. In his offfice I was presented with an application form to join what was then ‘The Stockport Bahamas Locomotive Society’ being told that if I showed the membership card if challenged I would be welcome at the shed anytime.

Mention of George Davies prompted me to dig out this photo of him on the footplate of 5596 at Ludlow on her first mainline railtour in preservation, from Shrewsbury to Hereford on 14 October 1972.

    Ah memories !
Didn't see the tour; but I was in the metalwork room at school which just happened to look out towards Latchford box and remember seeing 5596 drift downhill towards Arpley on it's way to Shrewsbury from Dinting for the first railtour, unfortunately didn't make a note of the actual date.

Looking at the video of the loco on YouTube going through Tamworth on the loaded test run, it sounded wonderful. It has the same deep roar as the Royal Scots.

The Jubilee is a Royal Scot "engine" with a Swindonesque boiler (improved by Coleman and co with some Horwich know how).
I'm sure someone could represent it in algebra...
