Todays Young people are very direct and call things as they see them.
To maximise access and interest and ease social media searches it should be renamed ' Old Trains Food Court, and stuff/whatever'

IF this happens (There have been numerous stalled attempts, about the only thing you can guarantee, is that any enlarged museum will have effectively less large exhibits, but even more catering and retail outlets.
I have been appalled at the changes over the last 10 years. The NRM is a shadow of its former self.

I went to see the A4 Gathering a few years ago, I would not bother again, anyway York has better restaurants. ;)

To be honest had they shortened to NRM on all branding and signage it would be way easier on the search results and far easier to hashtag on twitter and instagram.

The Railway Museum folks have actually missed a trick on that one when it comes to branding chances.

It’s - still - by far the greatest collection of railway artifacts in the country and one of the best in the world.

There’s a couple of food outlets - people have got to eat right?

The animosity for the museum and its staff is undeserved. They are in a difficult position.

They now come under MOSI - funding has changed, as have priorities. Everyone from them, to Network Rail, to NHS, police and social centres are squeezed by funding from Govt.

If you have a solution John, by all means give it. Otherwise, use your vote at the next general election and push for greater spending on the arts including museums.

Failing that, get your chequebook out and support it. Use it - or lose it.

You miss my point, I don’t really care what happens at York unless they get a management that understands railways and converts it back to a railway museum. The current pathetic set up is evidenced by the fact that found time and money for the pointless exercise of dropping the word National from the title. What spare money I have goes towards working steam, stuffed and mounted doesn’t interest me.

When the national collection was established I suspect that few would have expected there to be a flourishing growth of heritage railways and more to the point, an equally impressive fleet of locomotives operating on the main line. It is perhaps not surprising that the NRM will therefore want to review its role in this environment and I guess it sees its place more as somewhere that exhibits transport history rather than a mix of that with involvement in operational locomotives. Hence the current discussions over 70013 (and 777).

I agree that 777 most likily not going to be a likily return to the main line candidate because of the gauging issues, and my thought are somewhat on the same line as your, an NRM loco Swop, one in, one out, you might say, so how about this, 850 returns to York, or goes on loan to another railway, where possibly it may have the chance to stretch its legs , 777 goes to Ropley in the place of 850, and if 850 does return to York, 737 goes to The bluebell for display in its new viewing shed pending an return to steam inspection .

Having now read the article the one thing that leapt out at me was the concern about the 5305 group not having suitable accommodation for the overhaul of 70013, happy to be corrected but are they not accommodated on the GCR and with the GCR making a separate bid does suggest that there is more to this than meets the eye?

It smells a little WSR'y to me sadly........ Especially as elsewhere there are certain allegations being made regarding the windcutters as well.

You know John, I rather hoped when I posted last night there might be a deeper reflection on the setup and circumstances rather than more mud slinging.

    Sad to be wrong.

I’m a bit older than you and have watched the NRM degenerate from being probably the world’s top railway museum to what it is now. No mud slinging just saying it as I see it which I accept may be different to how you see it

The NRM isn’t just about the locomotives. How many more times?

Rolling stock, nameplates, models, drawings, uniforms, books, tools, letters. Showing everything from Rocket to a bullet train and everything inbetween.

If what you want is an engine shed with engines in it, in steam, then why are you turning to the NRM for that and not looking at an actual preserved railway - or Didcot? Or similar?

All of the criticism of the NRM seems to stem from how the locomotives are handled. It isn’t just locomotives, it hasn’t been for decades, and to decry it and its employees for changing is ridiculous.

It has to change to adapt to changing societal trends. Absolute fact: in fact we all do in this industry. That will change how they do things. Maybe items will be recalled, maybe they’ll be deaccessioned. Maybe they’ll be on display one year and somewhere else another.

Nothing is static in this life. Why on earth should the NRM be exempt from change?

I am seeing lots of effort ( and money) going into promoting the 'Museum' as a corporate entertainment venue...which is good as long as it washes its face.
Only a matter of time before tenders are lined with stainless steel to store Prosecco. and Gin, and smokeboxes fitted with dry ice machines etc..
