What about the Midland Railway centre perhaps as a base? or even somewhere in Derby or Crewe. Could the Crewe heritage centre become its permanent base ? I think with the a1 trust they were able to get the place in Darlington partly on the basis that many of the original locos were made there so the local connection.
Could you even get somewhere in what remains of Crewe or Derby works ? potentially then it might be easier to get local volunteers with works experience.

The few remaining buildings of Derby Loco Works are now part of Derby college, the rest have been demolished and the site built over.

Crewe heritage centre would certainly seem the most appropiate place reason that most pats were built there and quite few shedded there i guess years gone by, or if it were to do a run from hellifield to carlisle move it around to other stabling depots like carnforth southhall N.R.M. york depending where its starting r,way station its off from on a charter. But it wud be up to the lms patriot project owners to make a agreement wi crewe heritage centre good suggestion toplight, the choice is in the hands of the patriot teams owners if they get that far come 2020 when its ment to go mainline. Good luck to the lms patriot engineers and huyton boiler heritage steam services and hope to see her steaming late 2019 if every jobs completed such as tender and boiler hopefully completed late spring 2019.

I am not sure that there are many sites available. Most have been sold off or are in use - ie Crewe I think is mostly LSL? Burton is Nemesis, Barrow Hill is in use, not much of Derby remains.

Those that are closed have generally been sold off very quickly ie Llandudno Junction for example, or those that could be used are in use - Burton, Barrow Hill, Leicester etc.

I think NR property management approach is to try to sell off everything as quickly as possible ie Wolverton where the plan is to demolish everything for housing.

I thought that it was already at Crewe heritage Centre or am I mistaken?

Isn't the LSL operation at the former Crewe Diesel Depot? The recent images of the loco are presumably of it standing in the side of the heritage centre that was occupied by Pete Waterman's LNWR operation?

I think I will get things wrong here but.

Didn’t Crewe stop doing work for outside organisations because they were going to just be working for LSL, which is why the boiler people went first to Butterley and then to Liverpool(?). So I am not sure if Crewe diesel which is now LSL would have spare space or any interest.

I don’t follow these things very closely so I am probably wrong.

I think the patriot projects idea is to have their own engineers working on it at crewe maybe

It was LSL who started the boiler but then decided to stop doing contract work. I believe that a couple of the guys from LSL took the chance to form their own boiler construction business and now have their own premises at Knowsley. https://www.facebook.com/Heritage-Boiler-Steam-Services-Ltd-1988973648092985/

I understand that 5551 is still in the Crewe Heritage centre but that this is only a stop gap until more suitable premises can be found.

    Yes correct.
We have a team of guys working on the loco during the week, while we are in the process of getting quotes from the contractors mentioned in previous posts.
Work is also progressing on the tender by Leaky Finders, see their Facebook page for updates, and HBSS on the boiler.

    Support our Coach Appeal

We have been investigating the purchase of a support coach to run with The Unknown Warrior and have been making some low level enquiries over the last couple of years. A main line registered BR Mk1 BSK has now become available. We have registered an interest and expect to be conducting an inspection soon.

Even if we decide this vehicle is not for us, we still need to launch this appeal for funding to acquire a suitable vehicle. With your help we are looking to raise £100,000 to cover the cost of the purchase of a coach, plus possible refurbishment and or modification required for its role as a main line support coach carrying spares and providing crew accommodation.

Please donate online via this website, or call the office on 01785 244156, or send a cheque to:

Im a member of the lms patriot project i donate £100 everytime i see a stall at a railway gala and made £2000 so far cos i have faith in the team building this loco it will be a worthy investment like other donators members when completed and would like to ask a question on the project such as the con rods have not been properly whitemetalled the white metal not adhering to the bronze bearings. Or the tender frames with it been off a scrap loco , what do they mean by 40 years old parts in open air storage like signs such as corrosion what loco did the tender frames come from anyone who may know on nat pres, or the combination levers damaged does this mean the project would have to raise extra money from members to rectify remake these parts or is the contracter who made them origianlly with defects pay for the parts remaking. Can anyone tell me how a problem like the 3 i mentioned above resolved on nat pres? Cos the latest edition of the project news in their monthly magazine looks grim.

Also did I read something (facebook??) that there was a problem with one of the crankpins that has required wheel removal to rectify?

    Found it (6th March):-

A 5551 chassis update... she has been lifted to enable the release of the centre driving wheelset to have the out of specification crank pins to be rectified. The wheelset has now been despatched to Multi-Tech for replacement of the crank pins. Whilst she was off her wheels, the trailing wheelset was also dropped to attend to some missing rivets on the rear drag box.

image.jpeg G image.jpeg image.jpeg I won't talk about any specific parts here but the lifting of the engine and work we are doing is all for the good and is all positive. The progression is now onwards and up. Things are being resolved and positive. Compered with when I started work last year were in control of progress which is highly visable. There is lots to do and we're all highly motivated to get the job done sooner rather than later to a high standard.

Here is a picture or two of recent developments. The oil pipes have reached the engine and the cylinder relief valves have arrived.
