Next spring? Wasn't the original plan this year? I can see (from the excellent S+T blog) that installing all the apparatus has been a lot of work, and although they've been making consistent solid progress, it is now February and there's still a good chunk to go - but it should be done this year? Is the issue recruiting signalpeople, and training them up (and not wanting to introduce a major operational change mid-season)? Still, no reason for a rush, if next year works better, 'no biggie'; using the ground-frames seems to be perfectly functional.

Yes I thought it was this year too, but it seems to be next year now. I don't know the reason. At the moment they are laying a comms cable to Broadway, which is a big job.
In railway preservation things always take longer than you think. Except the rebuild of 4253 :) , that is on or even ahead of schedule.

I think once it was looking unlikely that the signalling would be ready in time for the galas (about the only time it would be necessary) there was no other immediate deadline so why not take the pressure off, have plenty of time to get everything sorted ready to go beginning of next year. Seems fair enough, although it has put the kibosh on a freight train for this year's gala. :(

As I haven't been working at Broadway for a while (Our Broadway slabbing team are resetting the paving slabs at Toddington Platform 1 at the moment), I just wondered if the crash barriers on Broadway bridge have been hit yet and if so what was the outcome?

They are still virginal. Amazing. Already saved us a bundle, normally they get hit every 2 months.

A new sign has just gone up :)

More on another sign that has just gone up in the next Extension Blog, which will be posted later this evening.

Great to see things pushing along at Broadway again, Jo. The next exciting phase is well underway.
I fully agree with your comments in the blog on the lack of picture rail, and its one thing which has bothered me about the look of the room, apart from maybe some simple cornicing, too. It would make the room look complete, and "correct" in its proportions, as well.
Can't wait to be sitting by that fireplace with a cuppa and a bun. Or will the RR be licenced? If so, "BERYL! Fetch me a nip o' 3-star, and look sharp!"

I understand certain senior members in operations were pushing for it to be an out and out pub! The coffeepot at Winchombe stocks the railway's beers so I se no reason why Broadway shouldn't either.

Is a picture rail something that could be put in later, or has it been designed out so to speak?

It could easily be put in later, out of season. Cornicing would be a little more challenging, but precast sections are readily available from a variety of sources.

My house was built in 1929 and I'm fairly sure it would have had picture rails. If so, all had been taken out when I moved in, but I had new ones installed in my sitting room when it was redecorated. I don't remember what they cost but it can't have been a fortune.

How much money is needed for (a) picture rails and (b) Bakelite power points?

The original power points, if any, would have been 2-pole, then later BS 546, but I wouldn't suggest going back to either of those.

It's not about the lack of money, it's seen as a waste of money.
The picture rail 'would gather dust'.

Seen by whom? It cannot be a waste of money if money is being offered solely for that purpose. I expect the picture rail at Winchcombe gathers a little dust too, nothing to worry about there.

Strange attitude, surely the whole point of railway preservation is to recreate what there once was, as close as you can as it was then, (or maybe keep any changes hidden ideally) otherwise you might as well just have a portacabin at Broadway and sell tickets from that.

The picture rail wouldn't gather dust either, you would hang pictures from it as they did back in Victorian/Edwardian days.

It's those blasted steam engines that cause it. They're a waste of money compared to just running buses between the stations ;)

The look is wrong without cornicing and a picture rail.

How otherwise will you be hanging pictures in an Edwardian style?

    Clock looks good!;)

You don't need a picture rail.
Use the rail installed already lower down.:);)
Might need to reorganise the seating to see them though.

By the way, other than the lack of signs etc the room could be mistaken for Grosmont Tearoom.
    Has somebody been copying?:)
