Yes all that has been discussed and considered in copious detail. At this point various options remain on the table, so we continue to plan down every possible avenue until such times as one becomes "the one"

 

Hi Phil, that's an interesting one of 10001. I can probably clean it up for you, reduce if not remove the magenta caste, if you like.

This week we are launching our largest fundraising endeavour to make the re-created 10000 a reality.

We need a variety of parts from English Electric designs, particularly classes 20 and 37. Everything from a generator to door handles! When such parts are put up for sale there will not be time to raise the money. We must have it in advance.
Stan Fletcher, who was English Electric's commissioning engineer on 10000, from 1947-1950 - and is now our President, is fronting the appeal to raise the required funds.

A random thought: was the existence of 10000 the reason for BR (re)numbering all diesels in the 1xxxx range, or was that just coincidence?

 

Under the initial BR numbering Scheme the number block allocation was :

GWR = 0-9999
Diesel locomotives = 10000-19999 but sub-divided into
10000-10999 main line locomotives
11000-11999 small shunters (-250 hp)
12000-15999 large shunters (+300 hp)
18000-18999 Gas Turbine
Electric Locomotives = 20000-29999
SR = 30000-39999
LMS = 40000-59999
LNER = 60000-69999
BR (Standard Tender) = 70000-79999
BR (Standard Tank) = 80000-89999
BR (Heavy Freight) = 90000-99999

Hence 10000 as the first main line diesel took its allocated number but under a later schema the modern traction numbering was modified to the D/ E numbering, that pre-dated TOPS, in which the 7 main line diesel locomotives retained their numbers (10000/1; 10201-3; 10100; 10800) as did the electric locomotives and the shunters were re-numbered into the new schema.

 

I assumed we all knew all that! My point was that presumably - given its unveiling date in late '47 - 10000 was also the loco's LMS number. So bearing that in mind, my point was: was the numbering scheme designed around it? All other Big Four diesel and electric locos were renumbered, weren't they?

 

RC Bond refers to it as "The 10000" It was said to be named in honour his(Ivatt's) father in laws equally pioneering loco on the LNER, though that sadly was never propagated like the rampant dieselisation we got. The lettering is very similar font too. Both equally pioneering in scope of design though. One a smash hit the other a mysterious failure. It's great to see the project going from strength to strength, it will definitely succeed now.

 

Given that BR's proposed numbering system had been detailed well before 10000 was released I think it fair to presume that the loco adopted the BR numbers from new; the important point of the locomotive was that it bore LMS insignia because it was released during the LMS era. This may have brought an inconsistency by using LMS insignia with BR numbering but it was indicative of the LMS seeking full credit for the development of the first main line locomotive to be built, owned and operated by a Grouping company - noting that the LNER had operated a main line diesel locomotive in the 1930s albeit built by a private company.
