I notice that on UKSteam tomorrow's Clun's loaded runs include a diesel. Not being an expert in these matters, I was wondering how the line up would be to allow for a run round at S-U-A but with Clun still on the front coming back.
To S-U-A would it be Clun tender-first then the diesel then the ECS so that at S-U-A Clun would run round and the diesel would be at the rear on the way back?
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers.
    Alan.

I should have thought more before posting that question. Probable order would be diesel leading out of Tyseley Works so that Clun would lead to S-U-A and then run round to be on the front of the diesel. Is that more like it?
    Alan.

It's possible the diesel will stay where it is and be on the inside of 7029 for both return legs, or it could stay on the inside on the outbound runs, meaning it's on the rear for the return and then in position for the drag back from Small Heath after it's first run back.

I think that's for 2 reasons. A diesel's in the mix on the coaches (1) in case the loco doing its loaded test run fails and (2) sometimes on excursions diesels do assist anyhow. So I would reckon that the loco doing its loaded test runs has tractive effort tested as well. A diesel idling on the back of a train is a lot of weight to haul.

Pretty much standard practice to take a diesel in the consist on a test run. The 47 should remain idle as it defeats the object of a test run if it's going to help out. I imagine it will be about 5 or 6 coaches, nothing too long.

In the event of failure you need a vac braked diesel to move the train as virtually every other operator only have air braked locos.

Which is why Tyseley Engines rarely stray that far from base.
