I suspect the "S" is obscured by the airbrake cock handle, but I'm not certain about the "I".
Route availability appears (if anywhere) on the cab side either as "RA with a number" on former LNER locos or a coloured disc on GWR locos. I really don't know what the L5 signifies.

    Cheers, Neil

61306 having just departed Stafford after a pathing stop and having crossed over the whole layout from platform 6 out onto the up fast is seen rounding Queensville curve having just taken the Trent Valley line away from Stafford. IMG_6853.JPG

    Thanks Neil
That was my understanding too about route availability - IPSWICH - I suspect you're right I've just looked at John's (@60017) shot at Woodacre and it looks to be written in full.
I wondered if the L5 referred to power classification but I don't recall seeing it on any other locos in LNE condition.

A snip from the full-res image confirms it. I think the 'I' is behind the red handle! IIRC they were RA 5 in BR days...an earlier version of that?

Pity about the exhaust blowing down over cab and tender

If you look at Ralph's shot at Hartford, IPSWICH can be read in full.

The resolution not so good as it's only an £80 point and shoot. :Snaphappy:

I once stood in the rain watching it (Copley Hill/Holbeck High Level area) trying to lift a train out of Leeds, it wasn't having any of it (slipping badly) and the support crew finished up hand sanding the rails. It gripped and got away eventually but not before it had attracted a large crowd of spectators.

The L5 on 61306 buffer beam is the LNER Southern Area Load Classification added to locos (or some of them!) after 1942. It is described in the RCTS LNER green books Vol 1 Page 88.
