And from 1957 BR adopted a slightly darker shade called Deep Bronze Green. There was article on Southern Locomotives Website which I posted a link to some years ago.

Well people got their wish to see 78022 paired with 46521. Interesting to note the two different shades between the two- with 46521 I think in Mid Tone Green and 78022 in Deep Bronze Green.

Both were in Brunswick Green. *Ducks for cover*

I'd be interested to see this link as, AFAIK, B.R. never referred to it as such. Deep Bronze Green (as used by Landrover) is often referred to by paint manufacturers as the nearest commercial colour to the B.R. shade.

I found the link, it does not say BR whether BR had a name for it http://www.southern-locomotives.co.uk/News/news_2014.html and scroll down to the bottom. If also shows the difference shades but I have not been able copy and paste from my phone.

I'm quite partial to the apple variety - much brighter than that drab green A.K.A Brunswick, Deep Bronze or even Gas Works Swindon!!

Thanks @derobeck . I understand all of the class were built at Darlington, so presumably also all started life in black, but the ones that went to the Western Region got the green livery when they visited the works.

I think that these locos were overhauled at Oswestry works, so they will have been painted in the Oswestry version of Swindon green.

All I can do is use the RCTS book referred to. All were delivered ex Darlington in black with lining. After that they were painted lined green at Swindon. One 78005 was overhauled at Caerphilly in 1960 and out shopped in green again. Others were overhauled at Crewe in the early 1960s and were turned out in unlined green, or like 78000 in black. There is no mention of repainting at Oswestry but I wouldn't rule it out, because they underwent repairs there but I doubt full overhauls at that stage. So all very confused at the end of their lives but safe to say that on their first repaint at Swindon, 78000 - 78009 were outshopped in lined green - in some shade or other.

Not forgetting that every works had a recipe book in the Paint shop foreman's pocket that said for this shade you mix 2 cans of this and add another can of that and some other.
With no allowance for differing quality of the constituent parts.
Or for when something ran out and some other substitute was made.
No quality control as we know it.
