I was very pleased there was no diesels involved at all with the memorial train workings. Nigel hated diesels, I remember the February 2000 tour of Ukraine when we had TE6115 a re gauged Kriegslok over the mountains to Chertkow on a very heavy train, sleeping cars, dining cars, 600tons at least. It was a overnighter, to cut a long story short ,when we arrived at Chertkow we had three diesels on the front as well as the 52. I pointed this out to Nigel, (he was never a very early riser) The train company's manager was found, a woman, I forget her name, It's not good enough he said to her, I was promised no diesels.
When he went into steam tours later on, I often wonder what he thought of diesels on the back for complete days.
A nice touch on Saturdays train was the reporting number 1Z66, Nigel's age when he died was 66.

On GB X when Scotland was dry and WCRC took precautions over diesel assists, we returned into England with, very sadly, a Duchess under gentle power and with a Cl 47 pushing. On the following day Galatea retained its diesel helper after Carnforth having started at Grange. But by Crewe, Nigel had had enough, and so had Mick Kelly tbh. The diesel was detached and we had a great run down the Marches line to Bristol. So you are right, Nigel didn't like diesels on steam trains.
