John Uphill, Faith's builder also(in the guise of North Dorset Locomotive Works) built the GLR's "Mr G". Then he found something much more interesting to do in Devon.

I wonder whether it would be possible to fit a conventional firebox to this type of loco.

Given the location of the rear driving axle, I suspect that you'd have some trouble trying to fit a conventional firebox.

The fitting of ash tubes is seen as an answer.

Why bother if you know the existing design works perfectly well. A conventional firebox will cost you twice as much before you even modify the engine to fit it.

A group from the L&B railway are raising the money to buy this engine and will get the new boiler made for it so, when back working it will be able to be used on this railway.

Just what exactly is wrong with the current boiler that deems it beyond repair

Boiler patches not up to standard iirc. I think it’s find a better repair solution (which is proving hard to find) or new boiler time as the inspector was unhappy with the current repairs that were done.

The marine firebox boiler is a relatively low cost design, but as has been seen on other locomotives, is relatively expensive to repair. Patch repairs are not really adequate, and where several areas of the boiler are faulty, the cost difference between major repair of the timeworn boiler and the construction of a new boiler make replacement a much simpler decision than for a standard gauge locomotive.

There are areas of thin plate at the bottom of the outer firebox and a small area at the bottom of the middle boiler barrel. Also a suspect weld repair at the top of the outer firebox and issues around the front end of the boiler barrel. All of this could be repaired, but as Ross has said, the pragmatic solution is a new welded boiler (that will give you reliable service for at least 40 years). All this is explained on the "for sale" website (https://narrowgaugesteamforsale.weebly.com/) on the "About" page which indicates a new upgraded welded boiler has been quoted at £33,000.

Good luck to them. It's a nice engine and it would be nice to see it stay on the L&B.

If you have a £1 K to spare and like to be part owner of this engine please contact Anne Belsey at Woody Bay (one of the railways directors) to buy into this engine as the railway can secure the engine for £40 K and about another £45 K will all been well see it working on the L&B again.

This is very tempting, but I thought there was not enough work for this locomotive at Woody Bay now that Lyn is here? I would be disappointed to bung my hard earned into this project, only to see it relegated to the back of the shed with its boiler cert ticking away.

Isaac is one of the mainstays of the present service but it would be prudent not to be over-reliant on it given that it is privately owned - another engine of similar power would give the railway more security over its needs till the next of the new-builds is available.
