A article ive seen from todays steam news on rail advent: V2 green arrow for potential return in N.R.M. 15 year strategic plan full story rail advent steam news for 22nd march. Looks promising but that cracked monoblock cylinder will be costly would all 3 cylinders have to be recast then.

Very optimistic reading of the report by Rail Advent, a possibility is the wording, other aspects of the plan suggest no public finance would be available, could crowd funding raise the relatively enormous sum required ? doubtful given numerous new builds already competing for our limited collective potential, Green Arrow unfortunately has little appeal outside the fanbase.

A very big stumbling block i agree on there about green arrows popularity with rail buffs to get crowdfunding. How much was the estimated cost to reapar the monoblock cylinder, achilles heel on alot of V2,s i read on wikipedia and other gresley pacifics his monoblock cylinder ive read about before.

Get the sky channels on board to chuck in a few bob for publicity. Worked for Blue Peter with the BBC (although there are differences, I admit).

Remember the Green Arrow comics from the Superman stable in the 50s/60s?

How big is that fanbase though? I think you seriously underestimate how popular 4771/60800 is, or is it because it comes from Doncaster rather than Swindon and dosn't have a copper capped chimney that you don't think it's that popular?

Likewise with the J52 alot of L.N.E.R. buffs would like to see that tankie running i bet again On the 60800 V2 would a crowd funding appeal start in 2021 but the money needed would be astronomical 4 the repair of the cylinder. A G.N. Loco i would like to see running but its only wishful thinking would be G.N.R. Atlantic C1 henry oakley it run at keighley in the 80,s but i was only a nipper tben.

In this day and age new cylinders aren’t that expensive with the new pattern techniques and casting methods that are available. New cylinders are being made regularly for new build projects and also for locomotives under overhaul so it is certainly no show stopper, if anything it will just become the norm as time goes on.

Well with modern technology today with computer operated machines where the settings are programmed in anythings posssible and polystrene cylinder patterns

I for one would chip in for Green Arrow - she grew a massive fanbase during her last ticket. On one mainline run I was on, she took 13 northbound over the S & C. My final run was a barnstorming run up to Bewdley tunnel with her much missed 'minder' Ray Towell on the handle - he knew how to make her talk! I remember thinking at the time I hope I get to see her in Steam again - if I didn't it was a darn good way to go out..

As has mentioned with regards the P2 new build, Mark Allat and Co are looking into a new way of producing/fabricating a mono bloc cylinder assembly for Prince Of Wales. I pondered if it would be possible to use the procedure to make a new/replacement mono bloc for Green Arrow. Just thinking as I type would it be possible to 3D metal print a new mono bloc. Granted A] you'd need a monster printer and B] would any such printed cylinder bloc stand the steam pressure and all the other stresses and strains placed on it from those moving parts etc........?

hard to believe that something so easily created wouldnt come apart just so, the same technology can be used to produce very complex models, moulds and patterns though...

I remember speaking to Ray at that event about 4771's future and he said something like 'maybe not right now, but in few years time she could go again' 4771 has a pretty big following as do quite a few LNER machines, you only have to look at the popularity of a certain A4 that's saying goodbye and an A2 that'll be back in action soon (!)

Wouldnt be completely unheard of to have a copper cap on a V2,
Perhaps turn her out in BR Green this time, and borrow Scotsmans double chimney and smoke deflectors when she is next out of ticket, for some 'Brand continuity'

Us LNER fans thought a double chimney V2 a far preferable option new build than a track straightening white elephant. So a a new monobloc might get funding

Was it the smokebox saddle seated on the monoblock cylinders that is weak point or was it just the general thrusting and vibrating off the piston rods how cracking could occur on the cylinder block.

It could only be done with a private industry partner, so who might that be ? then theres the who maintains it etc, Is this a plan to overhaul 4771 to take over the mantle of NRM flag ship and to retire flying Scotsman once her 7 year spell is up ? if it is I think it might be a good idea, as long as agreement can be made whereby the steaming and hiring fees from 60103 can be put into an NRM operational fund to help towards the costs of restoring 4771 and maybe Rileys agree to act as custodian of the engine in much the same way they have done with 60103 , if funds can be made available can the monoblock be ordered at the same time as the P2 , and machined etc as a joint order?
