Someone please explain how such thing works in connection with signal box

  3. Oh alright, suffering succotash. See Alan Turner's pics in the "A visit to the line in October 1972" page. Look very closely and you'll see the approaching object, just, through the weeds, and you'll see it again a lot clearer in the following pic.

I know Alan is renowned for "train in the landscape" but this is taking the genre a bit too literally.

  7. Yes, green is the colour. There were several green Brush Type 2's displaying that double arrow device around the King's Cross area in the early 1970s. Don't remember seeing one on the WR though. Blue 5530 at BTM was my first WR cop.

    Well two things

1 I did not know of the existence of your historical page

    and

    2. I did not know that event had even taken place and I thought the first train down since closure was in 1974!!

Thank you for correcting my lack of knowledge

  11. Thanks for the feedback, Mr @Triumph 2500S

wsr.org.uk offers lots of historical picture pages. Access these from the "Picture & video gallery lists" page (link under "Pictures" on top menu bar) The historical ones are mostly found in the right hand column.

My information is that it was running in the Up direction having dropped its wagons further down the Branch.

  13. Alan Turner who took the pics says "The loco had brought equipment in some wagons from Taunton for the filming of scenes nearby for the 'Belstone Fox'".

Interesting. I have the film on DVD. The railway scene - where (tricked by the fox) the pack of hounds runs on to the railway line and come to a sticky end by collision with a diesel loco - is not for small children.

"As there is no loco turning facility at Watchet, the return legs from the seaside town will be … a ‘top and tail’ operation with a loco at each end of the train, so recreating a realistic 1960's branch line theme." I think they mean "As there is no run-round facility at Watchet …". The lack of a turning facility at Watchet is irrelevant when those that do exist at the ends of the line are not used for most trains. Also what's this about "a realistic 1960's branch line theme"? Top and tail was hardly a usual mode of operation.

Sorry to whinge, but ha'p'orth of tar and all that.

Plainly the Railway could terminate the train and run round at Williton, but that would mean not getting to Watchet.

Given that there is no track work other than plain line at Watchet, what is the alternative, for this short period?

Time, I think, to stop whinging about trifles. I will just be glad to see trains running past the end of my garden again.

Can but whole heartedly agree with you, Robin! You lucky B****r :Hissyfit::Chillout:having steam trains once more running past the bottom of your garden Seriously though, as you've hinted at "things" could have been far worse. With the Railway going to the wall, no doubt taking many local traders with them along the way.....
