I am sure lots of people regard this as terribly sad, as I do.

I cannot help but consider that even in it's current condition the P.S Ryde is far more complete and sound than the Mersey Queen was when it was rescued. It has been berthed in Whippingham Marina, whereas as I remember the Mersey Queen it was sunk in the River Medina with far less superstructure above the main deck surviving than Ryde has.

The flying bridge would be easy to reconstruct.

    Cheers,

    Julian

I suppose the big $question is can it be dismantled in a way that would enable possible reconstruction at a later stage? as it will have to be taken apart anyway so rather than scrap it, why not dismantle it and then once its been dismantled, then make the decision on wither to rebuild, or sell for scrap rather than just rip into it with a JCB ? The issue I believe is contamination so I would imagine that some dismantling would be needed anyway .

The big question is who is going to pay for the de-contamination?.

I would have thought that it would cost considerably more to dismantle it in a controlled way with future reconstruction in mind. If the council/marina are paying they'll probably just get a contractor to cut it up in the cheapest way, as John says, they'll have the decontamination to pay for too.

Seems this 'restoration attempt' is, start a facebook page, collect £500o through crowdfunding. Then oh dear it is harder than we thought. Give up without anything having been done. I saw the ship for the first time in October and I doubt condition wise it is much different. The funnel and bridge for example collapsed some years ago. I was expecting this to happen but what a shame.

Should have had a decent burial years ago, I'm afraid.
