    Hi there
I`m working with a drawing of Ivatt class 2 tank engine (no. 41298) and have a question of the numbers applied to the cabside of it (and BR standard locomotives in general). The problem is that I dont`t know the dimension/ style of the numbers used on these engines , I guess the BR used to follow a determinated measurement.
I will be very thankful for any assistance:)

    an example below :

I could take a photo of the numbers on the actual loco for you tomorrow, I could put a tape on the cab side to give sense of scale, plus take some dimensions for you.

The number '3' in your image isn't the style that BR used. They used a version of Gill Sans.

I have recreated it as a TrueType Font :).

Didn't one of the Scottish Works - Cowlairs or St. Rollox - use different size numbers? I seem to recall that Darlington did some odd things with numbers too?

Yes engines overhauled at St Rollox had occasionally (?) slightly larger numbers than the 'standard' size.

As to Darlington, one example I can give is I have a slide of a Jinty at Crewe with both the BR logo & the number above each other in the centre of the side tanks. Non standard for Jinty's as standard practice was for the number to be on the bunker & the BR logo in the centre of the side tanks

The engine is 47482 & is duly noted as one of only two of this class overhauled at Darlington.

But both those photos are preservation era, so can’t automatically be assumed as 100% representative for the style used pre-preservation.

I recall that photo. Indeed, I think it's been seen on FB recently. Aren't the numbers used bigger than those normally applied to the bunker sides too?

Confession time I forgot to photograph 41298 for you sorry, in my defence their was rather a lot happening at Havenstreet on Friday. The photo of 70000 I believe was in a temporary livery after overhaul.

There was a standard 3 tank that carried it's number on the cab side rather than the bunker, can't remember which one but think it may have been allocated to Bath Green Park?

That would be 82044 which was also unique in not having the bunker lined out. Perhaps the works where it was last painted were used to doing 84xxx?
